Iceland Beats England
Nothing to do with our Tribe, but this monumental upset shows anything is possible!

The English head coach, who resigned after the game, received over a million dollars a year in salary...the Icelandic head coach is a dentist who
does this part time.

Best postgame quote I saw..."How could we lose to Iceland? They have more volcanos than soccer oplayers."

Beat NC State!

RE: Iceland Beats England
Great win to move to the quarterfinals but this is actually not as big of a surprise as most people are making it if you look at Iceland soccer over the past 2 years.

In Euro qualifiers, Iceland beat World #14 Netherlands twice and #18 Turkey once. In the group stage this year, they have beaten World #10 Austria and tied #8 Portugal before beating #11 England in the round of 16. Now I think the FIFA rankings are horrible but they have been competing well against and beat upper level national teams over the past 2 years.

I agree with Tribe Pride.

The same thing is happening with the team from Wales.

I think the term being bandied about is "golden generation" for Iceland and Wales.

The 2009 Tribe football team was a special team, for example, and the win over UVa said as much about the Tribe that year as it said about UVa. Let's see if the 2016 version can come close to what the 2009 team did.

I look to Stony Brook and Coastal in baseball, JMU and Richmond in football (and Delaware too), and VCU and Mason in hoops as examples for the Tribe to emulate.

That's actually a very interesting article. I follow soccer around the world pretty close, and admittedly the main thing I know about the Icelandic team is that Aron Johannsson opted to play for the US over Iceland. I say the article is interesting because it shows what is possible with the right allocation of resources. As others noted, although Iceland's defeat of England was definitely an upset, it shouldn't be THAT shocking. Beating the Netherlands twice in qualifying should have teams on notice, and if you watched the game you would see that this Iceland win wasn't a fluke (a la US beating Spain in the 2009 Confederations Cup), but they outplayed England for most of the game (and the scoreline very well could have been 3-1 or 4-1). The country devoted resources to developing soccer as a sport across the country, and now that is paying dividends. I had a quick look and their World Cup qualifying group lines up quite well for a chance to possibly qualify. I would not be shocked to see this investment pay off with a World Cup berth. Good lesson in what is possible if resources are allocated.

That was from their win over Austria to close out group play, but he had an equally awesome reaction to their England win:
