What's the deal with the new basketball arena? Any pictures of the design?

RE: New basketball arena?
The Vines center is to big and it's hard to create a good home environment. Vines holds about 9,000 and is used for lots of other things besides basketball. I've not seen any renderings of what a new arena would look like. On a different note, I'm psyched to see what the new indoor football practice facility will look like.

RE: New basketball arena?
I would like an arena that was smaller and designed specifically for basketball with the availability to expand should Liberty need it if we became a basketball power. I don't know of any renderings aside from what's on Liberty's website showing the "master plan" for the campus.

That brings me to another point: I like how Liberty is growing and they have a plan but there is a lot of potential construction that would replace recently constructed buildings such as Doc's Diner. I get that space can be limited but Liberty is shooting themselves in the foot by building things and then 10 years later destroying them to build something else. It's a total waste in my book and Liberty could better spend their money by getting it right the first time.

There is merit to having a smaller venue and keeping the Vines Center as the larger BB complex. When LU hosted the Big South tournaments, the place rocked with 8k+ fans and LU had a distinctive advantage. Attending those games was electric and it was a furnace for visiting teams. It's likely the reason the BSC changed it's format from one site tourneys.

I'd rather challenge the HC to continue to build the program to bring 5k+ attendance to games. At 5k, the arena half full would still be more than half full and an LU advantage. I've attended games at Winthrop, Radford, Longwood and Asheville (old complex not current one), and those were glorified high school complexes excluding Winthtop. Winthrop is a nice complex and I believe Asheville is also. LU should push the envelope to play to the facilities rather than be comfortable with a smaller complex. But with BSC conference teams coming to play, with 25-100 away fans at best attending, there will never be a justification for a larger complex. LU should look beyond the current situation and what can again be recreated with the atmosphere when the Vines is half or three-quarters or full.

RE: New basketball arena?
I attended LU in the 90's, and was at the BSC Tourney's and when it was jam packed when we hosted VA Tech when they were a Top 25 team. Let me just say that, other than the Carrier Dome, there is no better place for a basketball game than the Hooter Dome, aka The Vines Center.

IMO, a new arena would be pointless and a waste, unless they planned on moving just the women and the volleyball teams there, especially after building the underground practice courts, etc. When we make it to 1-A, we'll need the bigger arena anyway.

As far as campus is concerned, LU's biggest mistakes have been not building adequate parking near the Vines and taking away prime parking for the Bill.

RE: New basketball arena?
Guys, those days are likely not coming back. College basketball attendance is down across the board at every school outside the Top 10-15 programs. Kids don't got o games like they used to because they have so many other entertiainment options. Having a smaller venue makes perfect sense on multiple levels.

As for tearing down buildings and replacing them with new structures, that is because the situation at the school has changed rapidly. Why let bad decisions of the past remain a challenge to the present? Anyone miss the old circle dorms? Not me.

Good riddance to the circle. They were useful when we didn't have the money for real dorms...but good heavens I am thrilled they are gone. They were an eyesore to say the least, and that is putting it lightly.

I was in one of those dorms on the circle for a semester. Nasty. Current students have no clue how well they have it.
