The rate they are losing subscribers is accelerating. Didnt somebody on here post a few months ago what the break even point of subscribers is before they start losing money?

2.2 million subscribers at $9 per month for all their channels is almost another quarter $billion in lost annual revenue.

Wow.

Quote:Notably, the Nielsen data do not include subscribers of Sling TV and Sony PlayStation Vue.

That's why.

If there really are a decent number of households out there paying >= $100/mo just for TV (not talking landline phone or internet), I can definitely see those people saying "you know, $50/mo is plenty good enough for TV".

It'll be interesting to see how the overall pipeline of industries that bring payTV to people's devices will adapt such that the revenue stays the same.

Oh ... you thought they were just going to roll over and accept less revenue from consumers?? Fat chance. It's gonna come somewhere. No business ever says "oh fine, we'll just take less revenue than we were getting five years ago". That's not how capitalism works. Investors' demand for growth at all costs, is what rules the day.

That's not how capitalism works. Capitalism works by balancing a supply curve with a demand curve.

However, in the past there was no supply curve - because there is no supply curve in a monopoly. Now, there is actually a supply curve because there are numerous ways to receive TV. While no individual supplier has gone ala carte, the large number of suppliers, who all provide different channels, effectively provide a quasi-ala-carte system. And we're finding out that a much larger percentage of consumers than anyone thought do not find it worthwhile to pay for ESPN at the price that ESPN has been charging. In economic terms, the demand curve for ESPN is much farther left than anyone imagined.
