Exclamation Michigan State - Ohio State Best Modern Rivalry
http://www.cbssports.com/college-footbal...rivalries/

"Michigan State is the biggest game on Ohio State's schedule. It hasn't always been that way, but right now it's the most consequential game in determining the outcome of the teams' seasons.
Michigan fans disagree, obviously, as do some Buckeyes. The Big Game wins over time, sure, but in this moment Sparty-Buckeyes is the premiere Big Ten conference game. It's one that gets circled by all college football fans a week or two in advance to avoid missing the next chapter of the Mark Dantonio-Urban Meyer rivalry."

Just a tidbit of the article.

I would disagree. I believe rivalries transcend records.

Now, Michigan State - Ohio State may be the "best game" of the modern times but I wouldn't label it the best modern rivalry. LSU and Alabama not too long ago was a good one along with Alabama and Florida but those seem to have passed. As long as Dantonio and Meyer are still at MSU and OSU then we've got a good rivalry.

Statistically it is the biggest and Bama/LSU is in the top 5 on their list, but as much as I'd love a friendly rivalry with Ohio State, I agree.

Rivalries are regional, not national. Therefore I submit that OSU/UM is the top rivalry in the Northern Midwest and Northeast.

The South has a few of which Auburn/Alabama is perhaps the most intense. Texas/Oklahoma would take the crown for the Southwest and Plains.

This is one of those things where football fans know a bit more than the statisticians.

History, intensity, proximity, and some sense of parity are all elements that computers and statisticians have a hard time assessing. But I believe all of those elements need to be present before it is a great rivalry. Then I also believe that crowning one as the top rivalry is a regional matter.

RE: Michigan State - Ohio State Best Modern Rivalry
As a Spartan i have no illusions of grandeur that Ohio State is some great rival of Michigan State or vice versa. I know that the Bucks and the wOLVERINES are primary longstanding ingrained rivals. I would suggest that for myself and most of my fellow Spartans, I good humiliating defeat of our little sister mICHIGAN is the rivalry game that gets us blood thirsty and foaming GREEN at the mouth. For me personally, I consider the Buckeyes as cousins in hatred of MICHIGAN. Yes, i want to beat the Bucks....but it is in no way shape or form what i feel like when competing against our little sister michigan. I feel that Bucks offer respect to Sparty...delusional wolverines living in the past can never and will never offer respect.

I do think that the Buckeye/Spartan game is presently the game with the most implications in the BIG for the last several years.

The irony is both programs hate Michigan more than each other. It's like asking a Nebraska fan to compare Wisconsin to Oklahoma.

I feel no hate for Ohio State, now the State of Ohio is a whole nother story.
