This conference is awful
Ok... fans from UNT, Charlotte, UTSA,FIU, FAU, and ODU are all going to stick together and stick up for their respected school..understandably so, but the point of what we are trying to say is that you all don't belong together in a conference with the rest of us. Point and simple. This conference is probably the lowest of all conferences as of today, and having you guys aren't helping the matter. It's not your fault...its CUSA's fault by inviting you to join the league when you were' ready! And to all you Charlotte fans out there, yes...as pointed out in an earlier post...Football is the KING of collegiate sports with Basketball a distant second...and it's not just in Southern Mississippi. It's nation wide!

To the Charlotte poster that said " Southern Miss is no Alabama"...exactly we aren't...and Charlotte is no Southern Miss, Marshall, La Tech, WKU, Rice, UTEP, UAB, or Middle Tennessee. Get what we are saying. CUSA could have invited few members of the SWAC and had better strength percentage than the likes of an ODU, Charlotte, UNT, and UTSA.

When was the last time any bowl took a team with a losing record based on market size..? They don't...they take teams with based on wins/loses for that particular year.

Hey smart guy----I have about heard enough crap-talking from USM. Do you honestly think you guys would be any better in year 2 of FBS football or year 4 of football at all? If not, then just shut up (at least about Charlotte). Charlotte will be fine.

BTW, someone should tell the media and TV people about how no one cares about basketball because they sure have wasted a lot of money on the Big East and A10. I understand how USM and Marshall don't seem to care about basketball though---since you've never really been worth a damn at it, but some schools do care about it. Maybe y'all should take your basketball to the SWAC.

No, you didn't get my point. Market size is important to conferences the same way they're important to a giant company like Apple. They both want large consumer bases.

Conferences looking for expansion candidates will never remove market size from their criteria the way some say CUSA should have done. When conference realignment happens again, I'll guarantee you that Judy MacLeod will be looking at that Atlanta market no matter how good or bad the product is at the moment.

If she does again, then she is an even bigger fool then most people could possibly realize......Brand and play on the field has proven to trump markets tenfold, what more evidence could you possibly want these last few years? Market bubble has popped similarly to the housing bubble that popped a few years ago.....WKU was an add to offset markets even 2 or 3 years ago, no way they add based on markets again...

Markets has proven to be what most people said it would be, a disaster....I will admit I was shaking my head too when CUSA started plucking bad programs from the Sun Belt...FIU, UNT and FAU were really the last straw for me on how dumb that decision was and how incompetent.....Thank god for small market teams like WKU, La. Remind me how long it took WKU to become even decent after they moved to FBS. Charlotte is in year 4 of football and year 2 of FBS. WKU has no room to talk about anyone who has just moved up.

Where did I mention Charlotte? I was talking about other programs from Sun Belt. Sensitive aye? I actually like having Charlotte in conference due to basketball mainly. But if you are throwing out shots, we at least had a FCS background that helped us in the long run to get going....Yes you are right though, WKU proves you can be a disaster in FBS and turn it around pretty quickly, so if still struggling in 2 or 3 seasons might be panicking....

RE: This conference is awful
The problem for ODU, Charlotte and even FIU is that these schools started their football programs at the worst possible time in college sports history. The divide between so called Power schools and the rest is almost complete. This means that these schools will never benefit from traditional avenues of growth that come from decent tv exposure and ESPN coverage. For all intents and purposes, these programs will probably never turn the corner in a way they might have had they joined FBS 20 years ago. The timing for these programs, like all successful or failed business is so often tied to timing. CUSA as a business is bleeding money and its clients.

Bano went to the well one to many times and in truth should have been a better reader of the tea leaves and picked schools that already had a financial and winning foundation as part of their DNA. NOt new schools that would be forced to struggle on paupers wagers.

This is not a crack at ODU or the other start ups. Its more a case of bad timing. Every school that is not a "power school" is in a fight to the death to stay alive. Its hard for the start ups to fight if there is no tradition or built in apparatus in which to hold on to during the lean years.

ECU was very , very lucky to get the last boat out of CUSA. In all honesty I spoke with Terry Holland once , who lamented that if ECU did not get out of CUSA it would severely hurt or even kill the sports program. This was after the ODU invite and the destruction of the Big East. He seemed to realize that the regional dream was not going to work and if ECU did not continue with its traditional partners it would be a huge blow to the program.

I honest feel bad for Marshall, Southern Miss and UTEP. These schools helped to make CUSA a very good league. These schools have some of the most loyal fans you will find in all of college sports. No offense to the new guys, but you all have no idea what it is like to have something so important taken from you.( in terms of college sports and college sports pride)

Bano knew the league was in trouble and bolted. The problem for Marshall, USM, UTEP and UAB is that next year CUSA goes back on the open market looking for tv partners. With the league struggling right now, I fear that the next deal is going to cause some very hard decisions for the older members of the league. At that point forming something new might not be a luxury but a necessity.

Not sure how much of this is on timing. Good attendance and exposure doesn't necessarily have to come before winning. UTSA and ODU could both probably average well over 30k a game if they started winning. Of course, "win" is easier said than done.

There are teams that have been in FBS a long time that are in major media markets that just have been fairly consistently not good in football, and I don't think I need to name them and risk more flaming in here. The idea that just being in a major market means you can replicate what UCF and USF did is just a myth.

He wasn't taking a shot at anyone. Just stating facts. Many of our conference mates should have the fan support and fire in the belly that ECU has. They, like Southern Miss, have had to live in the shadow of the so called Powers of CFB. And they have scrapped and willed their way to where they are. Yes, they, like everyone else, have had their bad years, but when you look at it over time, UH, Southern Miss, ECU were the three most consistent football programs in the old CUSA.

No, in the United States of America, the current collegiate sports landscape, and the minds of conference realignment.

Football 95%
Basketball 5%
All other sports 0%

You are one DUMB ARS you know that! You can claim Charlotte and ODU were ONLY market additions if you want, but you clearly don't have a freakin' clue what the hell you're talking about. Market was PART of the reason, but so was overall athletic department performance/history in OTHER sports, facilities, academic prowess and POTENTIAL for even greater growth in all of these areas. If you are stupid enough to think you'd be better off in a league with App State, Ga Southern, etc. because they have decent football teams right now (and have never accomplished a damn thing in any other sport or academically) then good lord, please go picket at your school to apply to the Sun Belt. I promise you, none of us would give a crap.

App State and Ga Southern have HISTORICALLY been good in football. Stop trying to act like they are only good right now.

in FCS......no one gives 2 sheets about FCS, that is for sure.

Funny point you're missing is that they both have already won more games in FBS than Charlotte will over the next 5 years. App won 18 games their first two years playing an FBS schedule, Ga Southern won 18, Charlotte will be lucky to get to 5.

Your post was ok, until that bolded line. Do you realize that we were in CUSA 1.0 (which was definitely a basketball-centric league) and routinely beat the likes of Cincy, Louisville, Memphis, Marquette and others in front of sellout home and away crowds. We played Cincy every year on ESPN's rivalry week in prime time. We regularly accepted at-large NCAA tourney bids. After 10 years in that league, we had 7 NCAA bids and 2 NITs IIRC. We ended our CUSA 1.0 tour as the 2nd winningest team (by virtually all measures) behind Cincy and ahead of all those other great programs. We still hold the all-time series record over Louisville (a top 15 all-time bball program) who we also shared 6-7 years in the old Metro conference with. Charlotte certainly knows school pride and sports success (and then losing it due to conference shuffling), so don't kid yourself. This is why I have to laugh at people who act like Charlotte will never do anything in football. We have had good success/support in virtually all our other "bigger" sports (bball, soccer, baseball). There is no reason to think we won't eventually do the same in football but it will take a few seasons.

Again you don't have any kind of basis for your determination. It's not football strength. It's certainly not basketball or baseball or women's basketball strength. It's not fan support. It's not athletic budgets.

You keep saying football drives the bus but if that were true USM would be in the AAC or possibly a P5. You guys are obviously lacking in other areas.

They have been playing for 50 years even if it was FCS----shouldn't they have been a little quicker out of the gate than us?

No, you already said FCS didn't matter. For the record though, it's where your team should be.

(09-30-2016 02:34 PM)baruna falls Wrote:  The problem for ODU, Charlotte and even FIU is that these schools started their football programs at the worst possible time in college sports history.

Should have stated football. Charlotte obviously has a very good basketball tradition and yes i kniw yiu guys were 8n Cusa before.

This is some whiny bull****, I wonder if there are any men on this board because all ya'll do is cry and bicker like teenage girls. Nobodies going anywhere in this league, yall need to get use to it. If everyones school, was so good that they can demean their conference mates the way they do, they would be in the SEC or ACC. Wake up and deal with cards you are dealt because the game is being played now. Later ladies!
