Mike Aresco: The potential of becoming a Power 6 conference is within the grasp of the AAC.

The big story on the college front this week was that Big 12 conference choosing not to expand from their present compliment of ten teams. This decision coming after holding “open auditions,” for expansion this past summer that included Central and South Florida.

On this edition of the Sunshine Boys podcast, American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco talks about the future of the conference now that the Big 12 chose not to expand. He tells Joe Henderson, Ira Kaufman, and Jim Williams that his goal is to prove that the AAC is worthy of being considered a “Power 6 conference.”

A show named Sunshine Boys seems an appropriate outlet for Aresco.

"The potential of becoming... is within grasp". I will meditate on the meaning of this profound mystery and when I descend from the mountaintop I will divine it unto you.

It's a good interview. He explains a lot of different aspects behind college sports programming. It's not really a sunshine fest.

Are you a Louisville fan? You were here not long ago.

It's funny how Louisville fans and the Rutgers fan enjoy coming over here, as if they slammed the door behind them. It's like you need us for validation.

I've been following realignment since the first rumblings nearly 15 years ago. Our oldest rivals are in this league at UC and Memphis. We didn't slam the door, we achieved a goal that anyone here would want to achieve. That doesn't mean I lost interest in the conference or the rivals still in it.

As far as Aresco and the Sunshine Boys go, I thought it was funny phrasing. I mean the "potential of becoming" is within grasp. I'm just having fun and trying to wrap my head around it.

We all know how the club operates. "Achievement" is really a matter of taste. Many of us have been here for a long time as well.

You don't think is arbitrary?
TBH, I would have taken UConn over Rutgers and Louisville. Selfishly I'm happier to share a conference with the Huskies than I was with either the Cards or the Scarlet Knights.
That said, I understand the criteria the B1G and the ACC used in their selections. It's different than mine, and different from each others.
It was a matter of taste.

Don't use the word "achieve" in the same sentence as Rutgers. 05-mafia

No, I don't think it's arbitrary. It has to do with football prowess and staying power. Looking at the rankings and the press, it's hard to argue otherwise.

That said I'm glad that you're happy. Everyone wins! Enjoy UConn.

Why is it so far fetched? The AAC is the former big east which was BCS (part of the club). And don't even say it's not the same bc so many members changed. All the conferences have changed. The big east lost members before and retained BCS status.
