I think most of us used to just ignore them, but recently their fans (and ULL itself) have become almost unbearable concerning it. Used to, they called themselves UL, we said ULL, no one made a stink about it. But now if you say ULL or Louisiana-Lafayette, etc, their cajun senses start tingling and they track you down and yell at you on twitter, forums, wherever. I used to see ULL as a friendly rival with no real hatred towards them, but now I can't stand them and might actually hate them more than I hate Southern Miss...

Hatred is what makes a real rivalry. There are no friendly rivals. Nurture the hate. Hate is good.

I, like most Tech folks, didn't much care about @ Lafayette's name game until they try to claim that Ruston is part of our name. When asked to produce the law that changed our name, they quote a document that identifies where the university is located. However, they refuse to produce the law that changed our name because it doesn't exist. Ruston is not included in our official name.

I disagree with your claim the use of Louisiana is legal. It implies things that are completely false. USL did not bargain in good faith when they pleaded with the legislature and coerced NLU to go along with their name change. Their purpose was always to make an end run around the law; a law they asked for and refuse to abide. Yes, I read what a lawyer and Tech grad stated that the law was poorly written and unenforceable. You can throw a rock and hit a lawyer that would argue the opposite. The law should be amended so that it explicitly states that any UL@X university should not be allowed to attempt to gain the perception that they are the flagship of the ULS System. It is clear to me as the law is currently written. Unfortunately, other ULS schools are dealing with a school @ Lafayette that lacks principles, as proven by their academic fraud. Their baseball caps use UL as the emblem, another fraudulent act.

ULM has the best argument and most at stake against @ Lafayette's attempt to once again coerce the usage of a name that is not rightly theirs. I certainly don't understand why ULM would not fight being perceived as being "below" ULL.

If you are a Tech grad it escapes me how you could side with @ Lafayette's attempt to gain the perception that they are a flagship, which the use of UL and/or Louisiana certainly implies and is certainly precluded by law whether or not the name Louisiana appears in the law or not. Most of all, considering the history, @ Lafayette's argument makes no sense whatsoever.

If I'm "siding with @ Lafayette's attempt to gain the perception that they are a flagship" by stating that the law, as written, is weak and vague, then you're siding with them as well by stating that the law needs to be amended. Why would it need to be amended if it's airtight?

You see where I'm going with this? You and I are on the same page. You've basically admitted that they have the wiggle room, and are using it to their advantage. I'm merely stating my opinion that technically they're not breaking the law, as written, by calling their athletic teams Louisiana. When they use UL on their hats and jerseys, then yes, they're breaking the law. But what's anyone, anywhere, done about it? Absolutely nothing. And now, ULM has tossed in the towel and doesn't contest their use of that name for their athletic teams.

You draw lots of legal assumptions in your posts about this subject, but they're just assumptions. Neither of us are lawyers but I know enough about the law to know that, generally, if it's not in black and white, then it's grey, and the grey area is where they're operating and it's not illegal to operate there.

For instance, we have thousands of pages of tax law in this country but there are also tax courts operating every day where the IRS is forced to prove that someone has broken the law by operating in a grey area. If the "loophole" is large enough that the IRS is losing too much revenue, they go to the legislature for a fix and then it's eventually closed if the legislators agree. That's where we are with this issue.

I've said it before and I'll say again here. You do spend way too much emotional energy on this subject as I've seen you write literally thousands of words about it, here, on our board, and even on their site. Why don't you quit questioning me and others about what we think and do something about it? Use your own funds, start a "fund me" page, or just beat the bushes for money and sue the bastards? Or go to your legislators and ask them to close the loophole once and for all.
