Ben Carson: Slaves Were Immigrants Who Came Here And Worked Really Hard ‘For Less

"Ben Carson made his debut as secretary of Housing and Urban Development Monday by telling agency employees about the virtues of the “can-do” American society. Carson said this value system was best exemplified by slaves, whom he characterized as immigrants who came to the United States with very little and worked very hard.

“That’s what America is about,” Carson said. “A land of dreams and opportunity. There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great grandsons, great granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.”


What kind of nonsense is this? I don't know where to begin. I did't realize slaves came to America on their on freewill. And worked hard for less? I didn't realized they got paid. Is a slave an immigrant?

It was his turn among the Cabinet members and Trump staffers to make an incredibly stupid comment and take off some heat on the boss.

So what? One of his cabinet members teetered upon absurdity again. I realize this and know that it's going to happen over and over. Luckily, we as Trump supporters are in a position to never have to acknowledge it. We'll just call you whiners and move on to a more tasteful thread that praises him.

I don't find much offense in this. It's just another loopy statement by a loopy person. If he says that the Pyramids were for storing grain and that Joseph was in charge of that, then this is a statement that I would expect him to make. We all know a person like him. Smart as a whip, but you really hang around him to hear the impending dumb statement. Complete a surgery in the morning and talk about the earth being flat in the afternoon.

Those slaves on ships, while they DID eventually start to hope that the future generations could live better than them through the groundwork they were laying, were on their second transaction and were about to go through at least one more in the coming weeks. I think lumping them in with other immigrants is dumb.

They weren't brethren. It might be the most diverse continent in the world and this was before colonialism. They had no reason to care. Guns and supplies in exchange for enemies that you have almost zero in common with was a good deal. They ended up paying dearly for it at the end of the day when they were in turn made slaves on their own land.

He should've said, slaves in the americas were much better off than they were prior as slaves in Africa, and left it at that.

They didn't. The problem here is the idea that "immigration" refers ONLY to a voluntary/autonomous act on the part of an individual person. I don't understand where that idea came from, but I disagree with it.

Some slave-owners would use cash-payments or other material rewards as a way to try and incentivize more productivity. That is not to say that the payments reflected market-value.
