California might actually pass a good law
New law is set to make violent attacks recorded with the intent of sharing on social media a CRIME after a teen was sucker punched by a stranger on Snapchat
Jordan Peisner, 14, was attacked outside of a Wendy's December 2
The strangers filmed the beating for Snapchat and other social media
The bill 'Jordan's Law' would punish people who conspire to film violent attacks for social media with fines up to $5,000 and up to 16 months in prison.

Is this for all people including conservatives or does it apply only to when Libs get attacked? Just being facetious here.

Depends on how they do it...

I mean the violent attack is already a crime, is it not? Are we now going to add a thought layer to this whole thing?

I would make the act of committing any crime, with the intent of prospering from it via social media it's own separate crime. One with a relatively small penalty.

That way the "why" of an assault can't muddy the conviction of the assault itself.

I could see this leading to people not recording and not incriminating themselves.

So, battery is already a crime, but its extra criminal if you film is and put it on social media? Sounds a dumb as "hate" crimes to me.

That's what I'm thinking. Unless you make it a stand alone crime to record another crime, you are committing, for the intent of profit. I *could* see that being it's own crime.

But I'm guessing there is already something on the books close to this.

Makes it a crime for the person who videoed, and planned in advance with the other criminal, the violent assault. So besides the dude who sucker punched someone, his buddy who videoed the attack gets charged with a crime.

Ohhhh, ok, That makes a bit more sense, I suppose.

But seems to me this falls under conspiracy, no?

That will be tough to prove.

What if you just happen to film something, share it, it goes viral, and the victim is humilated?

That's where the prosecutor has to prove intent.

If you are part of group stomping a victim and you dont't interfere with stopping it, you are aiding and abeding in a crime.

Which is already illegal, so the new law is once again pointless, plus you're a idiot for filming it and putting it online, like those morons in Chicago who harassed the mentally retarded kid.

Sounds like a textbook case of conspiracy to me, which is already a crime.

Aiding and abetting is already a crime.

Seems to me that once again someone is trying to make things that are already illegal "more" illegal. Much like gun laws perhaps the best course of action isn't new laws but enforcing the ones that are already on the books. On the surface it seems like proving there was a violation of existing law wouldn't require any more effort than trying to prove there was a violation of the proposed law so it's not like this is making things easier. Sure looks like a textbook case of "We have to do something!" symbolic feel-good legislation.
