RE: Bengals Free Agency: Rumors, Moves and News
Bengals are in Reds 2014 mode. Still think they're completing but not adding anything to replace when quality pieces leave on a team who's obviously on the way down. Going half in half out serves no purpose. Go into rebuilding mode, it doesn't take long in the NFL. Avoiding it just puts you one year further behind. I'd start with trading McCarron and cutting regressing vets like Pac Man and Maleleuga

Tough call. I thought Dre came on pretty well last year for the most part in his contract year, but he hasn't lived up to his draft status. Apparently he got a 5 year deal. Supposedly, the Steelers were on him hard but dropped off when the bidding got over $10M/year so presumably the Bengals went at least a little over $50M for him.

Pac's offseason really put us in a bind coming on the heels of WJIII's injury wasted rookie year and Dennard's struggles to get playing time. I don't love it, but we gotta have somebody at CB we can at least semi count on.

yep, zactly what I told my neighbor yesterday. Pac is 34 too. DK isn't great, but just ok- basically dependable and we almost had to keep him- even if we overpayed a bit. Surprised both Zeitler and Whit got away.

Yeah, I figured they'd probably sign one or the other, more likely Whit. I guess the bright side of losing those two is it sets us up for some possibly nice draft pick compensation next year. But of course the down side of that is to get it, we can't really sign any meaningful free agents. So one guy I'd like to see us go after is Nick Mangold. Since he was cut, he wouldn't impact compensation as I understand it. He's getting old too, but supposedly is also a great teammate and coach on the field and won't cost nearly as much as Whit did. Then they could move either him or Bodine to G to somewhat offset the loss of Zeitler. (OT but wasn't it just a few months ago that some expert around here was talking about what a "bust" pick Zeitler was?)

I'm biased but Barwin is another guy it would probably be worth making a play for.

Honestly...not if you guys are sticking with a 4 man front. He has been lackluster at best as a hand in the ground DE, but has been Pro Bowl Caliber as a 3-4 OLB. I could see Baltimore, GB, or Indy going after him, because he fits their scheme and they both have a lot of UFAs/Retirements at the OLB position.

Just checked his stats on Reference, he has averaged 30 more tackles and 4 more sacks per season while playing as a 3-4 OLB than in his time as a 4-3 DE. PFF has him as an upper 3rd starting caliber and one of the best 3-4 OLBs in pass coverage over a 3 year span and a below replacement level 4-3 DE. He'll end up somewhere with a 3-4 (NYJ, Balt, GB, Indy, ATL, Arizona) and make an immediate impact.

Apparently with Whit's years of service the new CBA says the max comp pick the Bengals can get is a 5th rounder.

Quote:Connor Barwin set to visit Bengals

Posted by Josh Alper on March 13, 2017, 6:58 AM EDT

Connor Barwin played at the University of Cincinnati in college and will be back in town on Monday for his first team visit since he was released by the Eagles.

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports that Barwin will be meeting with the Bengals about the prospect of joining the team for the 2017 season. Barwin was dropped by the Eagles in a move that saved Philly almost $8 million under the salary cap.

Barwin moved from outside linebacker to defensive end after the Eagles switched defensive schemes in 2016 and the move was followed by a drop in production from previous seasons. The Bengals also run a 4-3 base defense, so a return to Cincinnati may not prove to be the ideal fit for Barwin.

As of now, though, it’s the only meeting Barwin has scheduled so he may wind up betting that things will go better the second time around.

James Harrison 2.0

Would be nice to have him back but its not beneficial to either party IMO

Hell yeah. If Barwin signs with the Cincinnati I would forgive all of the other moronic moves and non moves by the Bengals.

Peko signs with Denver reportedly for $7.5M over two years. We got a lot more out of him than we invested and he had a career here he should be proud of, but I agree it was probably time for us to move on. Not all that surprisingly, the final two for him were ex-Bengal coaches with Vance Joseph's Broncos outbidding Zimmer's Vikings.

Also
- Margus Hunt to the Colts on a two year deal with details to follow. Maybe opens a spot for Barwin.
- Andre Smith coming back for a visit. I'd give him another shot if he comes cheap given our current needs.

Reports out that Burkhead signed with the Patriots. I know who I'm drafting in Fantasy next year!

Yep, I could see him doing major damage next year if he's healthy. I'm not sure about the contract situation, but at this point I think I slightly prefer Rex to Hill. Hopefully Hill will return to form and make me eat those words.

In other news:

Bengals waived James Wright the other day and not surprisingly Hue picked him up for the Browns.

Andre Smith visited today. Given where we are right now, I really hope we close the deal with him (edit: reports are coming out now that he will be signing here)

Bengals also have visits done or coming with LBs Keenan Robinson and Kevin Minter.

RE: Bengals Free Agency: Rumors, Moves and News
Should have a new thread up on the draft after free agency has pretty much wrapped up. But for now, bengals.com has done the legwork on a summary of who is being mocked to the Bengals.

I haven't really dug in too deep yet, but right now I'd be pretty happy if we landed Foster. I'm also kind of kind of intrigued about Fournette but many mocks expect him not to get by Carolina at 8. Grabbing Mixon in R2 is probably more the Bengals style anyway...

I agree on both counts. I'd be happy if they get Foster. They need a stud LB to support Burfict. Fournette intrigues me also, but my gut says they stay away from a RB that high. Like you said, they like the Rd 2-3 guys at that position. But he is such a talent, I don't know if you can pass on him if he is still there. Carolina may opt to go with Cook. I hope they don't go DE because I don't think they will pick the right guy. I've seen Charlton in mocks all the way down in the 20s in Rd1. They can't seem to get that position right and keep whiffing on guys.

After watching all 14 of their games this year and attending a few in person, Foster is the best at his position that I have ever seen. The guys is a wrecking ball. Just a devastating linebacker.

That's quite a statement on the current state of affairs. I think it could be an okay signing if he's recovered fully from his injury and if they put him at guard, not tackle.

I have no problem with any of our free agents leaving except Zeitler, Smith is intriguing inside if he stays healthy ( kinda like a Dallas guard ). 1st round pick should be Foster or wr Williams from Clemson.

Never said he was gonna be a pro bowler, just big like Dallas guards ( for run blocking ). The myth might be your reading comprehension skills.

I am happy to have Smith back. He was a good Bengals though never quite what we wanted. He could workout well as a guard. The key will be how well the young tackles play.

perhaps your reading skills shall be summoned. it is i who am suggesting he will be a pro bowler, since somebody's gotta be it on this pitiful team
