Liberty's Commencement Speaker Announced for 2017
http://www.liberty.edu/news/index.cfm?PI...MID=227845

Spoilers: President Donald Trump is the speaker.

I don't know how I feel about this. I think it would be really cool to have THE President of the United States as the commencement speaker. On the other hand, I am not really a fan of President Trump. I really think this is a big deal in a good way for Liberty and it was still surprising (to me at least) despite the BFF status between President Trump and Chancellor Falwell.

The tally agree, cool it's the president hi however this will lead but to nothing more than further political barriers for LU. I really wish that the University would focus on academics, Christianity athletics and student life. Leave politics alone for Pete's sake.

Not a fan of President Trump, but for LU to have the current President give this speach is huge and a no brainer. Great opporunity for LU. Just wish it was a President I was more in line with.

This, you may not agree with him but getting a current president to speak is huge.

Having any POTUS speaking at a commencement is huge no matter who it is but because of how polarizing Trump is and considering it's Liberty it's going to bring out the haters and as someone said it's going to create even more political barriers and negative image towards the school.

Such a shame because the academics is improving, money is going into research, and there are more quality professors getting hired. All of it is going to get lost due to of all this distraction.

I think it would've been smart for them to have Trump speak in 2018 or 2019. There is too much going on with the Russia drama. At least give it a year and see what happens. You know he owes Jr a favor so it wouldn't be a problem.

All good replies. I hope posters from other boards read this thread so they can read how some LU fans can support the athletics of the school without endorsing the actions of JFJr. or who ever made the invite. Seriously, who ever invited Trump did they think that was going to benfit the school and pay some huge dividend? Yes, having a POTUS speak is momentus. Having Trump speak with all his baggage and the whirlwind surrouding his staff seems like a crazy idea. Sure LU will be on all the networks and will make headlines with the engagement. But they are going to be headlines better not received. A poor overall timing of the invite as others have stated.

Sheesh, with all the *hubbub surrounding Trump's invite to speak at graduation, imagine how crazy it would be if the other even more horrible candidate had won and was invited?

Either way, you just can't turn down a sitting President. This will turn out to be a good thing for the University.

*And the hubbub seems to be confined to a small number of disgruntled message board posters. I haven't seen a major outcry in society or academia regarding this.

I agree with this. I was thinking about how others would react if President Obama was invited to speak when he was in office or how I wouldn't boycott the trip to the White House had I been a member of a team who won a championship.

My grandmother, who I've never heard speak about politics, was so excited to tell me that she heard President Trump would be speaking at my school's "graduation speech thing" and that she understands that him and "that guy at Liberty who is in charge" are friends. The only outrage I saw/heard was when my wife read off someone's post on Facebook who was outraged.
