Ford vs Chevy
Looking to buy a new 1/2 ton truck. I've usually bought Chevy in the past but am intrigued by the new F150's. The only concern I have is the new aluminium bed that Ford has out and how well that would hold up. I tend to beat the hell out of my trucks, and need something that can hold up. Dodge is out of the question, as I don't want to deal with all the maintenance issues that come with them after 5-10 years, and GMC's are out of my budget. I would possibly consider a Toyota, just not very familiar with them and how hard parts are to attain down the road.

Any experience with either?

RE: Ford vs Chevy
Just traded in my 20 year old Ford (bought new in '96) for a new F150.

Go drive them all, climb up in the Ford bed and walk around.

I don't know what you use your truck for, but maybe take a look at the 3/4-size trucks (Colorado, Tacoma, Canyon)... their specs on the new models for towing and payload compare favorably (or better) to the 20 yr old V8 F150 I just traded in.

There are lots of reputable reviews on the web as well as personal youtube reviews.

RE: Ford vs Chevy
i've heard toyota's are the best damn trucks. i heard the f150's are the highest selling autos on the market. i'd like to get a truck one of these days, i'm always pointing them out to my wife. my neighborhood is littered with sweet ass trucks. i want a 90's f150 like that one topkat traded (if only he'd known). of course i don't actually need a truck (maybe a few days out of the year to get mulch and sh!t), they just look cool is all. good luck brother

Lush, having a sit down, story telling hour with you would probably have been worth 1-2K off the price.

I just picked up a used Ram. Love it. I was test driving a bunch of F-150s and just thought the interior felt really tight/small. I liked the interior, but it felt cramped to me with that huge center console. Really like the look of my Ram. Looks just like this one.

RE: Ford vs Chevy
Mechanically, I opt for GMC models. It makes no sense but I've gotten 200 to 250,000 miles on three GMC suburbans with the 5.7 and 400 turbo transmission combo with no issues. Put those same components in a Chevy suburban or truck and they just don't last as long.

I steer clear of ford if you are going to deal with a high mileage situation. Steer clear of a Dodge truck unless you have a lot of extra money to burn on new rear ends and transmissions. Strongest best looking trucks on the market but the rear end of the drivetrain is their weak point especially if you are towing heavy things (I tow a tractor and an RV).

The older Chevys and GMC's eventually need an intake manifold gasket after about 12-15 years because the geniuses used a new type of anti-freeze that dissolved them.

Whatever you get spend the money on the upgraded radiator and the largest transmission cooler that will fit. Money well spent on any model.

I think I just answered my own question. The GMC's come with the larger heavy duty coolers. Heat is what kills transmissions.

Lush, I love the mid 90's F150 and F250's. I would love to get a blakc, single cab, manual tranny, F250 circa 1994 that's still in decent shape.

I would love to get a Sierra, I just can't justify the extra espenses. I would like to beef up the cooler if that is an option, as I just burnt through a tranny on a Silverado after years of overworking it towing more than I should have.

RE: Ford vs Chevy
The most driven automobile in the U.S. by millionaires is the Ford F-150. There's a reason for that.
