They were gassed in the 2nd half. Plus in the GCU game Brent Wrapp was out who is very important to how the offense runs. If you want to read into a throwaway game against GCU when you should really be reading into when we beat you down in Bakersfield or our NIT semifinals run. Those games actually mattered.

Clarity, I respectfully disagree. Cal State Bakersfield MO (modus operandi) is to jump all over their opponent in the first half with overly aggressive defense. If the opposing team can weather the initial storm, CSUB will be gassed and fizzle in the second half. They did this all season long. CSUB simply didn't pull out to a big enough margin over NMSU. Last year's NMSU team was built to last 40 minutes. The stay consistently strong the whole game. NMSU just kept feeding the post (Chuha) and started racking up fouls on your big men. BTW, CSUB fouls way too much. It is a style of play that is a double edge sword. Only 6 out of 347 teams commit more fouls than Barnes' team. The difference between NMSU, GCU, UVU and most of the teams CSUB met in the NIT, is the top WAC schools see CSUB two or more time a season and know exactly how to play your team. Those teams in the NIT were surprised by CSUB's aggressiveness and let the Roadrunners build an insurmountable lead. NMSU stayed close and just waited for CSUB to fizzle out. Then they just reeled them in and put on the gas down the stretch.

I respect your analysis and your civility PistolPete but I just disagree. If you watch the game again, you will see the 2nd half they were not playing like themselves. It's very obvious to me that they were exhausted and didn't have the legs to keep up the aggressive style of play. In the Utah Valley game in the 2nd half they were using a full court press at the end of the 2nd. They were not tired and were playing how they do. Also the teams in the NIT have all the tape in the world to study how we play, they should've been ready. Not really understanding your point there.

They had nothing to play for. That's fine you can believe what you want to believe. You dudes should start reading into the NIT run. That's cute that you are so excited about the NIT run. Impressive for sure and I even watched your games to support our WAC brethren. But we count our success by NCAA tourney's. One day you may even grow up and see that for yourself.

RE: New Mexico State hires Assistant
To a coach and fans, every game that they win counts, losses on the other hand ... excuses are made. The reality is that fans overreact on the highs and the lows. I remember when the Red Sox lost a playoff game and Manny Ramirez made a comment to the effect of "It is only a game" he was vilified by the fans. But he was correct, it was just a game. Now if we are talking about research produced by the University that makes a major impact on society, that is important.

Amazing that a thread about an assistant coach has almost as many posts as some of the speculative conference realignments. This sounds like SEC football talk where the assistant trainer gets more coverage than many other conference's head coaches.

I like the injury excuse game, too. Where should I start?

GCU would have (insert outrageous claim here) if:

- Boubacar Toure doesn't shut down an entire practice when he destroys his knee and is out for the season.

- Kenzo Nudo doesn't pop an Achilles 10 minutes into the very first practice of the pre-season.

- Matt Jackson doesn't miss the whole season after discovering he needs to have back surgery.

- Joshua Braun doesn't lose the entire month of December to an in-season meniscus repair & recovery, from which he probably came back way too soon.

- DeWayne Russell hadn't missed the first 2 games & played nearly the entire WAC season with a broken shooting hand.

C'mon now. We are all better than the excuses. Aren't we?

You shouldn't really look too much into the NIT run either. If Cal had played their 2 or 3 guys who declared for the nba bakersfield probably wouldn't have won.

2 guys yeah. Doesn't matter because we shot like 75% from 3. We would've still won.
