OOC Basketball Schedule
Nov 10 Clarks Summit
Nov 14 @ Wake Forest
Nov 17 Mercer (Paradise Jam- Virgin Islands)
Nov 18 Houston/Drexel (Paradise Jam- Virgin Islands)
Nov 25 Toccoa Falls
Nov 27 Howard
Dec 02 UNC Greensboro
Dec 04 @ Georgia State
Dec 08 Maryland Eastern Shore
Dec 16 Kentucky Christian
Dec 21 Ft. Wayne (New Orleans Classic)
Dec 22 La. Tech/Alabama St (New Orleans Classic)

Well, there's not much to get excited about. I am very embarrassed by the THREE non-DI teams on our schedule. Are we that bad? Is it that hard for LU to schedule opponents? Can someone explain this scheduling philosophy? I suspect there are at least seven wins on the OOC schedule and hopefully more. There sure isn't anything for the paying fan to get excited about our competition.
I sure hope we continue winning. That'll bring fans.

Wow, that's pretty sad. Maybe it has something to do with McCaw's late hire. At least it is a pretty winnable schedule and should set us up for some good momentum going into league play.

RE: OOC Basketball Schedule
That schedule is rather pathetic and makes no sense other than to to ensure at least 3 wins. And if we're going to continue playing non-D1 schools, at least play local schools like LC, Randolph, Roanoke, Hampden-Sydney, etc. so you can at least put a few extra butts in the Vines Center seats.

All three Sub-DIs are likeminded schools that we are throwing a bone. I doubt having LC on campus would boost the attendance much during Thanksgiving or Christmas break. Having two tourneys on the schedule is going to make it tough to have an attractive home lineup. It is what it is.

Selfishly I am intrigued by a Christmas week ride over to NOLA to catch a game or two.

You're probably right, but the 50-100 people that would go to their gyms are better in the Vines than the 0 in CVA that are interested in Clarks Summit, KCU, and Tocoa Falls. Although, I don't entirely begrudge LU for throwing a bone to smaller Christian schools.

That said, are you hearing anything on the Big South and where we're going to park the rest of our teams past?

All indications are that we might be sticking around for the time being beyond the 2017-2018 school year. But no confirmation.

RE: OOC Basketball Schedule
Ideally, non-Division I schools would not be on the schedule if I made it but I can sympathize with Liberty's reasoning.

To me it looks like the thought process behind the scheduling is to continue on from last year's momentum by winning a lot of games despite the questionable difficulty. Maybe once we get a couple 20+ win seasons under our belts then we'll ramp up the difficulty to build our notoriety.

As a side note, it isn't surprising to hear that we are trapped in the Big South for the foreseeable future.

I guess I don't see it as trapped. The Big South has been a good partner to Liberty. Liberty has been a good fit for the BSC. I am thankful the BSC is welcoming us to stay. I don't think it would be a good situation at all for all our sports to be independent. There is no other conference we could call home except maybe the Atlantic Sun, and I'm not sure that is any better than the BSC. It's not like the Big East is knocking at our door with an invitation.

I agree with you. I'm glad to be staying in the Big South for the rest of our sports for now. I think they're a better option than the A-Sun. I kind of think that the Big South and Liberty had already made an agreement about Indy football, with Liberty agreeing to wait for Campbell and UNA in order for the Big South to keep the auto-bid. It's never a good idea to burn bridges.

I believe that if we keep improving in mens basketball and football can be successful (good attendance, regularly having winning seasons, etc.) we'll eventually end up in a better conference like the CUSA or as an Indy in the Southern, A-10, or CAA.

RE: OOC Basketball Schedule
As much as I love our football schedules, our basketball schedules leave a lot to be desired. It's like McCaw used an intern to get things done and just had a first come, first serve mentality and these were the only schools that called. We don't even have an attractive conference to lean on for fans to buy tickets. We already have an attendance problem and we had a pretty good product on the court last year.

Having said that and previously calling our situation in the Big South as being trapped, I appreciate the Big South not kicking us out and the Big South has been good for Liberty in the past. However, we have significantly outgrown it and they are holding us back from where we want to be (whether we have earned it or not). Who in the conference would we want to continue playing as a home/home rival in all sports once we move on from the Big South? Anyone?

RE: OOC Basketball Schedule
Ritchie and his staff are booking the hoops schedule. McCaw is involved with football scheduling but otherwise individual coaching staffs are responsible for taking care of their own business.

The Big South is a nice fit for the short term since there really aren't better geographic footprints within reason. The CAA doesn't seem to be rolling out the welcome mat anytime soon.

Winthrop would be a decent rival to remain with. Other than that not much.
