Awesome for Asian Robert Lee. He became a viral celebrity overnight. Only a matter of time before he joins the Dancing with the Stars cast.

LOL!!!

Yeah, a young Asian Announcer who finally gets to "break thru" on ESPN Internet coverage went to ESPN's top heads and demanded he be removed from his game.

If you REALLY believe that part of ESPN's "official" statement, then there is no hope for you.

Well, that's the employment market for you. Maybe if there were better worker rights in the US, a lowly employee wouldn't have to pick the option their employer clearly wants them to make.

But I somehow think you're not in favor of anything like that. And ultimately everyone will forget in a week and happily tune into ESPN as soon as kickoff happens.

The OP states that 'it looks as if ESPN thinks that some people can't see the difference between these issues.' Your post seems to be an example of that.

Oh no, he's gone full Bob Dole...so senile that he's ranting in 3rd person now.

Let me understand....you agree with espn right? Your views of the civil war are too simplistic. Only the super rich owned slaves. Most fighting in the war wanted a separation from the north similar to the separation from Britain. Some had to fight just from the sake of being in a war area if you were male.

RE: ESPN pulls Asian announcer from Virginia game because name is Robert Lee
My views on the Civil War are I'm not going to get into such a discussion on a football message board. I understand war is complex in general.

I do know Robert E. Lee was opposed to any statues going up because even he was able to recognize losers should not be getting participation trophies and the country needed to move on under a Union victory.

Edit: And yes this is a dumb situation not helped by ESPN. But ESPN/ABC makes dumb decisions all of the time.

Let people have their heroes. As long as it's not on government buildings (for the reasons you gave), I'm fine with it. We can't pretend history didn't happen and you can't stop people from having reverence for who they want. Wake me up when they reinstitute slavery or Jim Crow.

It's a big fuss over nothing.

I see and understand your point of view. However, most understand that it is far more complicated than that.

For example, I went The Citadel. We celebrate that fact that four Citadel Cadets fired upon the "Star of the West," which was a Union resupply ship at Fort Sumter. These were the first shots of the Civil War. Fort Sumter was surrendered, without any lives being lost. The Officer that commanded Fort Sumter was Major Robert Anderson. The Officer that ordered the firing was Major Peter Stevens, Robert Anderson's student at West Point, and mentor. They also were close friends. When Robert Anderson surrendered, he and his men were offered safe passage home.

Obviously, this is just an example of how the Civil War is more complicated than how you portray it. In fact, there are thousands upon thousands of books that discuss it. If you start reading about it, I think you will find that it is significantly more complex than your posts suggests.

Maybe you have just read the wrong books.

It's a big fuss over nothing.

A lot of these are on US government property. Obviously if it is on private property, it's the property owner's rights. It's also interesting to acknowledge that many of these statues were mass produced and built in the early 20th century - at the height of the KKK/Jim Crow. There was also another spike during the 1950s/60s at the height of the civil rights era. They're not always in historically significant areas and even some are in states that were not in the CSA or didn't exist at all.

Germany does it right. They acknowledge their history and have many memorials/sites for the atrocities they committed. But they don't glorify their Nazi leaders. They honor the victims. Somehow the message is able to get across and history is not lost. Hitler's death site is a parking lot and apartment complex now - yet they are still able to teach it just fine.

Also, how many statues did people cite in history papers? I'd guess that information came from books, encyclopedias, etc., rather than statues. Statues that exist now fail to tell the whole story and ignore what happened to the victims.

One more thing I'll say on the Civil War - and not really directed at you, but here is some information on the secession declarations from CSA states. They all specifically cite preserving and/or expanding slavery as a chief issue. And that any talk of abolition is just an excuse for violence and uprisings. Any states rights issues revolved around being able to maintain their slavery.

From the very core, the point of the succession was to preserve the institution of slavery. Other issues were minor.

This is your flaw. Your trying to compare the south fighting in the civil war to Hilter killing jews, gays, etc. I say it is similar to fighting the red coats. A separation from existing government authority. Would we have the same reaction if we lost against the British? To say all the common folks were fighting for slavery is ridiculous.

My flaw is pointing out victims? You're talking about the enslavement of a human population here based on skin color and perceived inferiority versus another race. In the Inhumanity Olympics, genocide gets the gold. Slavery gets the silver. Both are horrible acts. And while the chief objective was leveraging their "property" for production, many still died or were abused. Families ripped apart. Pregnancies forced. Pregnancies ended. Education denied, etc. It was a inhuman act that even other countries recognized was wrong and ended it well before the US figured it out.
