Disney buys much of 21st Century Fox - BTN not included

Quote:It’s official! The Walt Disney Company has purchased 21st Century Fox, including the 20th Century Fox Film and Television studios, along with cable and international TV businesses. The deal includes 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox 2000, 20th Century Fox Television, FX Productions, Fox21, FX Networks, National Geographic Partners, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox Networks Group International, Star India and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Sky, and Endemol Shine Group.

The deal doesn’t include the Fox Broadcasting network and stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network. Those will be spun off into a newly-listed company.

Interesting that they're willing to pay billions for comic book characters but didn't see any value for BTN. I guess they're still that pissed with Delany after all these years. 03-drunk

That's not my take at all. If Disney bought FS1, FS2, and/or the BTN then they invited the destruction of the deal with the only viable anti-trust charges that could be leveled.

There are many streaming services to compete with. There are enough movie production companies and a variety of companies producing independent original TV content that those aspects would not have stood up in an antitrust suit. But college sports is a whole other matter. If ESPN buys FS1 and FS2 and the BTN then they own close to 85% of the college sports rights. NBC, CBS, and a few remaining others would comprise all that was left. They had to leave FS1, FS2, and the BTN on the table or the whole deal might have been vulnerable. Now add the governments main concern with the control of "The News" and the omissions from the deal make a great deal of sense for strengthening the approval of the sale by the government.

So what does that mean? I think FS1 and FS2 will probably now be able to lease material from ESPN which means they will now have access in the Southeast to broadcasts the rights of which they could never have purchased. If the spirit is cooperative between ESPN and FOX then their combined influence might well be able to move us to a P4 world because between them there aren't many problems that can't be resolved.

Remember neither of them owns any of the PAC, they just lease product. Division of the PAC between the Big 12 and Big 10 becomes possible, not probable, but possible. If the PAC throws in with one or the other now the cooperation could exist for the Big 12 to be divided in equitable and reasonable ways.

The only way I see this potentially negatively impacting the Big 10 is if FOX and ESPN remain uncooperative. Then ESPN has the much larger platform to push their product and that could have some negative consequences for the Big 10. But I don't see this scenario as having much traction because it doesn't help either of them monetize their investments.

Bingo. The News and Sports portions of Fox were never on the table to begin with anyway, and that's a good thing for consumers given the slanted media coverage out there as well as for sports fans.
