Week 2 Thoughts/Stream of Conscious Thoughts
My guess is week 2 is not going to be as good for the conference as week 1. Big Ten teams favored by a bit in quite a few. Think they'll come out on top in most, but there will be an upset or two along the way.

Lot will be revealed though, no matter what. Rutgers and Purdue impressed even in losses and I want to see if that was a fluke or the start of a trend. They are both favored by about 4/5 points over MAC teams this week and think how they fare will show us what to expect rest of season.

Penn State and Iowa both have major instate rivalries this week and both have been caused serious problems by those programs in otherwise very good seasons. Penn State probably would have beaten out Ohio State for the Fiesta Bowl playoff spot last year if they had not lost to Pitt (the committee would have excused the blowout loss to Michigan if it was the only one in my opinion). Iowa has the always difficult task of going to their instate rival and trying to come out with a W. Even in years, Iowa has been very good and Iowa State is terrible, that has been tough (in 2002, that was Iowa's only loss of the season).

Michigan State and Western Michigan is interesting for a few reasons. Western Michigan hung with USC most the game last week. In addition to being curious about whether Michigan State is recovering from last year, I wonder if Western Michigan could still be class of the MAC even after loosing so much.

Minnesota is actually an underdog vs. Oregon State and that surprises me a lot. Nebraska is a much bigger one to Oregon and that does not.

Looking forward to watching Buckeyes most of course and think we have to see improvement in the long ball if this is going to be a win.

Penn State -- Pitt is the game to watch, though Nebraska has a tough game in store. Iowa/Iowa State is a rivalry game and anything could happen.

Pitt didn't look good against Youngstown State but hopefully plays up for State Penn.

Pitt needed OT To beat YSU, if PSU has trouble with them it does not speak well for the NIttany Lions.

Nebraska had trouble last week with a SunBelt opponent, they are going to need alot of breaks to stay with Oregon.

Oregon St is one of the worst FBS teams and should be beaten by 14 at least.

NU has the rivalry brainiac game with Duke, the Dukies always play the Cats hard, NU usually pulls away in the 2nd half due to better talent. Cars cannot sleepwalk in the first half like they did with Nevada or they could be down by 14 at half.

RE: Week 2 Thoughts/Stream of Conscious Thoughts
MSU might be in trouble if Western plays them like they did USC. I wouldn't be shocked to see an upset.

I'm still not sold on Iowa. They'll be firmly in the pretender camp until they actually beat some one respectable.

Pitt and PSU will be closer than some might think, but in the end PSU will prevail.

Unless Nebraska was playing second stringers on defense last week, they're in trouble this week.

The only thing keeping the Gophers from going down is that Oregon State is BAD.

Illinois gets destroyed this week.

tOSU pulls a double take of last week. Plays rough in the first half but comes out to dominate the second.

Everyone else should win pretty handily.....

RE: Week 2 Thoughts/Stream of Conscious Thoughts
Maryland plays Towson. They *should* win without too much of a problem but that's why they play the games. The more interesting thing to watch is how Kasim Hill, true freshman, takes over the offense. With Pigrome done for the year and Aniebonam out for "months", the injuries are stacking up. Richardson is in the concussion protocol so perhaps we'll see him for the UCF game.

From Twitter : "Maryland football OC Walt Bell said Ty Johnson and Lorenzo Harrison sometimes handle quarterbacking duties in practice". Please God, not 2012 again!

Nice post. I don't disagree with much. WMU/MSU is going to be informative either way. I think Rutgers and Purdue both improved and it's for real. Whether or not they win will be part of growing pains. Nobody ever gets there overnight. Beavers and Gophers? Their both good for pelts. Anything could happen. I don't buy the upside on either this season. If the same Nebraska that played Arkansas State shows up again then I'll take the Ducks and by double digits. Penn State by double digits over Pitt. Iowa / Iowa State will be decided by turnovers.

But your Buckeyes have something that Oklahoma doesn't, a solid defense. That will be the difference in the game, not the deep ball. The wheel route, the slant, and the sideline 15 yard button hook are all you will need to loosen up the stacking of the line. You'll need the deep threat when you play Penn State.

Wow. After watching the Purdue game all I can say is I'm impressed. Had some good runs. Some good passing. WR's dropped some balls so it could have been even worse. I'm not exactly sure why you bring out the tricky stuff but whatever. Purdue won and it was fun to watch. Brohm looks like he's going to do good things.

There's a mini ACC/B1G football challenge today:

Quote:The ACC and Big Ten square off in three games this weekend when Pitt plays at Penn State, Indiana visits Virginia and Duke hosts Northwestern.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Big Ten sweeps, but I'm hoping for a win or two for the ACC... Northwestern @ Duke is the intriguing one (even if it is under the radar).

RE: Week 2 Thoughts/Stream of Conscious Thoughts
Wisconsin managed to slumber thru another victory. Don't know whether to be worried about this being 2 weeks in a row or be OK that they played mediocre and still won easily.

Hey Rutgers, how do you manage to play great against the #7 team in the nation then come back and lose to Eastern fricking Michigan?

Maryland looked great again, dare I say for real?

So much for the "Northwestern will win the west" crowd.

PSU, solid again. should move up to 3 or maybe 2.

Finally, I'm a B1G guy and a B1G fan. When B1G teams play non conference teams, I root for the B1G (except for Iowa) that being said, I DID take some guilty pleasure seeing the smugness wiped off the faces of tOSU.

RE: Week 2 Thoughts/Stream of Conscious Thoughts
Few thoughts:
1. Oklahoma is a very, very good. I am not entirely sure how good the Buckeyes are. They definitely are continuing to have exactly the same problems though and not developing a deep pass will plague them against most major opponents. It is frankly amazing it hasn't led to more losses in the last 2 years than it has.

2. Great win by Iowa.

3. Minnesota was actually an underdog out west (hard as that is to believe). I think they'll be fine going forward. Indiana

4. I said I wanted to see how Purdue and Rutgers looked after quality game losses. We'll see how the season progresses, but Purdue soundly defeated a team who I have seen as one thought to compete for the MAC and Rutgers ended up loosing. They both will grow this season, but Purdue definitely seems more up to me right now.

5. Was surprised by the Illinois win. They were fairly significant underdogs if I remember right and maybe things are starting to finally right there.

6. Michigan underwhelmed in their win. Defense is fantastic though and I think they are definitely in the national title chase.

7.Penn State beat an instate rival whom you know put everyting possible into that game.

8. Nebraska was down huge early and almost came back. I'll give them some credit going forward for that, although we'll how things play out.

9. Northwestern...you will probably win 6-7 conference games after a very lackluster non-conference showing so far given past evidence.

10. Indiana continues to feel like a decent middle of the pack type team which is a good rise for them (if Virginia isn't just terrible). Hope a few more things go right for them this year.

That's a way of life in Piscataway. See 2004, following a win over Michigan State, lose to New Hampshire. A few other times.

Regarding IU.....although I knew they were 2-10 last year, I was shocked at how god awful Virginia was. I had assumed that it must have been a team chemistry thing last year, and that they'd be much better with Bronco (Bronko?) taking over. Nope. I didn't notice one player on their entire team that could be 2nd team ACC.....horrible.
