I’d be amazed if we can get someone on campus who still has to “take care of business in the classroom” to get to FGCU. Looks athletic though, would be an upgrade in quickness over someone like Jones.

Stand-alone I'd agree with you, but considering Davidson was also inquiring about him I'd assume his academics are okay. In terms of his playing style, kid's odd, for lack of a better term. Extremely athletic, but not fluid at all and a string bean. Wouldn't be able to redshirt wherever he goes because he's a prep school kid, too.

Unless something has changed, I don't think prep school counts against your 5 year eligibility window.....the service academies for example have prep schools, and subsequently those players have 4 out of the next 5 years to compete.

Junior college of course does count against the 5 year window.

Oh no, I'm not talking about eligibility. Just that you often don't redshirt prep school kids because that leaves them 2 years behind their classmates academically (not necessarily all...some prep school kids are younger). The same reason why Corey went JuCo instead of immediately transferring so he didn't have to sit out a year.

So I'm expecting that we'll hear some news about transfers in the coming weeks, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few departures. That being said, we're going pretty hard after 2018 SF Drew Peterson evidently. He's a 6-8 wing who's rated a 3* by 247 with offers from a bunch of mid-majors. It appears our biggest competition is Wisconsin, who also appears to be working hard for him although they haven't offered. A quick Twitter search shows that we've been up to see him at least 2 or 3 times this year, which is quite a bit of travel.

I think we lost a guy in the last couple years who walked on at Wisconsin but I don’t remember where I read that. Guys like this are who we need to bring in talent wise, someone who isn’t quite highly rated enough to get into the Big 10 schools.

Hopefully we don’t lose more than 1 or 2 to transfer. I think that’s about the average nationwide.

Interesting about the transfers. I agree with cr11owl... If it's only one I won't be very concerned as every program loses guys. If it's two, it depends who it is. If it's three, WTF is going on.

The only guys we absolutely can't afford to lose is Malik Osborne IMO. Though with his sister apparently coming to Rice, I doubt he's leaving.

Though Najja showed improvement at the end of the season, I don't know if he was quite good enough to "upgrade" a la Marcus Evans. That said, maybe he could transfer like Jordan Reed to a lesser school for more PT and end up having a nice college career.

If we're taking bets as to who is transferring, I would bet Tim Harrison and Robert Martin...

Harrison has had quite a disappointing career at Rice after being highly touted out of HS and Martin's dad is an assistant at Northeastern so I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to go up that way.

I’d guess Harrison or Meyer or Lester not being scholarship anymore (since he was originally a PWO). I keep hoping Harrison will turn a corner on defense but it still looks a little fast for him. Meyer appeared to be in the doghouse the 2nd half of the season even though I know he tweaked his back a little.

If we lose 2 I hope we get a transfer and not another freshmen to balance the classes. 5 is the max class I’d like to sign.

Don't think they would be behind academically - they'd still be sophomores class-wise, even tho redshirt freshman status eligibility-wise. I must be missing your point - easy for me to do since I'm just an old dumb-ass tackle.

Nah I'm not making my point well. I just mean that it's tough on some kids to take both a prep year and a redshirt because you'll be a freshman athletically when kids your age are sometimes supposed to be academic juniors. It can kind of become a screwy situation in terms of ages and classes.

Also, I should clarify I'm talking about post-HS prep years, not just ordinary prep schools.

Another name to potentially watch for 2018 is Isaac Likekele. Just decommitted from Fresno State. Think he was somebody either the previous or current staff was looking at. Tough 6-5 guard who plays with Chris Mullins. Not sure whether there's any interest, but if he's close with Mullins, maybe he'll look at Rice. Also possible he just goes with Rodney Terry to UTEP.

RE: 2017-2018 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
6-8 sophomore Donovan Mitchell just transferred from Wake Forest. Averaged something like 2 pts and 2 reb per game. From California but we offered him out of HS. Don't know if the staff is looking for a transfer that would have to sit, though.

6-3 sophomore JoJo Anderson also just announced he's transferring from Northern Colorado. From Houston and played 20+ minutes last year. Not sure of the academics but he had some interest from Harvard. Would have to sit out a year.

6-2 Vanderbilt graduate Larry Austin Jr is also transferring. Played 11.0 minutes last year. Would assume he'd be fine academically and would be immediately eligible. Same as Sophomore Payton Willis, although he'd have to sit out a year and probably wants to play at a higher level. We offered him out of HS.

Andy Van Vliet, a 7 footer who just decided to transfer from Wisconsin, is another name to watch. Played 7.7 minutes per game. Think he would have to sit out a year.

Almost the entire Pittsburgh Panthers team that went 0-18 in ACC play is looking to transfer, with Stallings let go. Not saying there is an obvious candidate in there, but that's insane turnover (and actually an opportunity for others looking to transfer in to a P5 league). Key recruits, too. Only 3 returning players haven't said they want to leave.

Bad coach, bad record, that the players love....sounds like Bailiff syndrome.

Just think, UMBC has more ACC wins than Pitt this year.

I’d like to see us recruit in other parts of the world. We get students from all over. Why not student athletes? Some of the best basketball is being played in other countries.

We had a bunch of international players under Braun. I'm not disagreeing with you, but there are plenty of good international and US players. We need to recruit players who value a good education and aren't looking to use Rice to jump to a better program. Find the right guys and Rice will get better (as long as the coaching staff is sufficient), regardless of where the players are from.

Lester just tweeted he’s leaving. I’m not sure what other “options” he thinks he’ll find but I guess we’ll see.
