They have to stop the slow but steady decline.
How much of their success can be attributed to Tom Osborne, and how much to the Big 8 Conference?
They don't have the walk-on program they used to -- kids go elsewhere for the scholarship.
Am I wrong in thinking that during the Big 8 days, Nebraska had a pipeline to some Texas HS talent? But after leaving the Big 12 for the Big 10 that pipeline dried up?
It's a couple of things. In the Big 8, with Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado as the geographical extremities, Nebraska had it in to the midwest, Texas, and the west coast. They didn't have to prove anything on the field against the major Texas teams while doing so. That started to become a factor once in the Big XII.
It really started going south in the Big XII. Colorado simply wasn't wrong in wanting more western schools in the conference. Adding Texas didn't really expand the footprint of the old Big 8. A push in any direction, really, would have added a new dimension to the conference. It didn't help Nebraska any, especially with the changes in scholarship awards, and how Nebraska was curiously able to get some of the best walk-on's in all of cfb.
While a logical and legacy "pick" for the Big Ten, I'm starting to think this is a death sentence for their football. They're the one school not in the AAU, so, it's easy to negative-recruit. They can't pull that walk-on thing anymore. And, really...they aren't going to get much of a sniff from the eastern boundaries of the conference (and I'd argue, the area MD, PSU, and Rutgers like to hit isn't even in a Big Ten state...Virginia), while being cut off from Texas and the west coast.

Of course, the last time Nebraska hired someone eager to bail out of a fading situation, that guy was Mike Riley.
Bielema? Bad idea....

RE: Nebraska AD Out
Nebraska is exactly the same thing as Iowa. That's what their fans have to learn to accept. They'll (Nebraska) get to have a football season like Iowa's 2015 season once every 15-20 years. And that's just simply that.
Terrible add for the Big Ten and nothing can be done about it now.

RE: Nebraska AD Out
There was nearly a century there between the two wishing for each other. It was a GREAT addition. The problem is, Nebraska didn't try to leverage anything when they got to the table. No unbreakable rivalries to bolster recruiting, no +1's to bring with them, and we all know how seemingly clueless they were with the money AND talking to other conferences.
They're where they are because they didn't take their own stock seriously. They got weak at the knees with the academic relationship, not knowing they probably could have gone anywhere AND get more for going there. Total leadership issue.
