Exclamation Penn State preparing for A&M raid of Franklin?
Quote:Penn State officials are preparing for Texas A&M to make a run at hiring James Franklin should Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies part ways, CBS Sports has learned.
Franklin, in his fourth season with Penn State, has helped resurrect the Nittany Lions from crippling NCAA penalties in the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Penn State won the Big Ten in 2016, 4 ½ years after those penalties were handed down.
In August, Franklin agreed to a three-year extension worth $19.75 million that takes him through the 2022 season. His buyout, should he leave after this season, is $2 million.

I expect there will be a lot of negative feedback behind the scenes if indeed this is their idea of a great hire.

As a TN fan I think well of Franklin and think he did well at Vanderbilt too, so why is this not a great hire from an A&M perspective?

I think they want the grand slam hire of aChip Kelly or equivalent. I like Franklin and think he would do great at A&M.

Sumlin still winning games this season.

Because of the implications of his alleged involvement in covering up evidence in the Vanderbilt rape case. There were other in house discipline, or lack thereof, incidents as well.

Yeah, I can't see them dropping but 2 maybe 3 more games. Is 8-4 enough to get you fired? Doubtful. Is 9-3 going to get you fired? No. And I'd say he has an outside shot at 10-2 when looking at the rest of the schedule. But right now if I had to guess I think the Aggies finish 9-3 and Sumlin remains.

That completely fair. Is this an extreme case, or is "morality" going to start being a much bigger factor in hires? (I.e TN hired Barnes partly do to his "clean slate")

I'd say it will particularly be a sensitive issue where women are concerned. The Baylor scandal being another example. Quite frankly F.S.U. should have been hammered for the cover up with regards to Winston. But all schools will be more sensitive to these issues moving forward.

BTW, A&M denies the stories about interest in Franklin and Finebaum said this afternoon that the talk was likely generated by Franklin's agent to try to drive up extension and/or raise talk with PSU and that is quite likely.
