One of the all-time classics based on when it was made (1954)...

Even though they technically wouldn't qualify as "horror" movies..

The first Alien movie. Saw it in the theater, scared the bejesus out of me.

Blair Witch Project. Saw it in the theater, the end made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

@ Babadook

--How is it? I can see this on Netflix.

@ Coraline

--interesting choice.... I have seen it, and yeah, in that Nightmare before Christmas vibe I could buy a "Halloween" movie.

Same here. I saw it in the theater on my 12th birthday as an afterthought because it wasn't on my movie radar at that time. The stomach scene alone was totally unexpected, disturbing, graphic and realistic all at the same time. In addition to that, the scene where the dude is looking for Jones the cat after walking around the dim, lonely bowels of the ship kept you on the edge of your seat because you weren't sure what was going to happen next. Then it comes out of an air vent shaft grown to larger than man size with that long cylinder head and metallic jaws and you knew this was something freaky, scary and unique on film. The artist who thought that concept up was a genius. The alien made little green men in flying saucers obsolete after that.

And this my friends is why after Alien and Aliens, the franchise has really taken a turn downward--- NONE OF THE OTHER MOVIES after those two have rekindled the franchise.
