Wazzu AD takes Nebraska AD job - who might he hire to coach football?

Nebraska's new AD is Washington State AD is Bill Moos.

11:37 AM - 15 Oct 2017

Cue the jokes about Nebraska hiring someone named MOOs. Also cue this kind of speculation:

Leach is at Wazzu because Moos went to Key West and got him. That doesn't mean coach follows to Nebraska, but relationship was really tight.

11:47 AM - 15 Oct 2017

Bruce Feldman knows Leach well, he co-wrote Leach's book with him:

Bill Moos is perfect AD for Leach.. I’ve always thought Leach would’ve been crazy to leave him for another job..Curious to see this play out

Before Wazzu, Moos was at Oregon and was AD there when Chip Kelly was brought/bought to Eugene.

That's not much of a connection.

Oregon pushed Moos out in November 2006 because Moos had a major disagreement with Phil Knight. Moos was officially on Oregon's payroll until March 2007.

Mike Bellotti hired Chip Kelly as his OC at Oregon in 2007, and at Knight's insistence, Bellotti stepped aside as head coach (and became AD) after the 2007 season to let Kelly become head coach.

Moos is 66. As a coach I would think twice about going to a school where the AD may be gone in 2-3 years.

I think Leach would do quite well in the Big 10. But I also don't think Nebraskans (particularly the older wealthier ones) would be supportive of that kind of offense. It looks like a catch 22 to me.

That's a good point. Leach's offense is radically different from the Devaney/Osborne teams that the Husker old-timers loved. Leach's teams rarely run between the tackles, and they are so far away from power running that WSU doesn't even have any tight ends on their roster because there are no tight-end sets in their offense. Husker diehards might compare Leach to Callahan, though that would be an inaccurate and unfair comparison.

But Moos won't be determined to hire only Leach or a Leach protege. The head coach when he was Oregon's AD was Mike Bellotti, who ran pretty traditional college or pro-set offenses and had a lot of success with that.

If Nebraskans have been unhappy with the results they have been getting by hiring coaches who coach the "old-fashioned" way, maybe they should consider doing something different.

That's a very solid assumption, but one that is seldom acted upon by the powerful and wealthy who hate like hell to admit they are/were wrong. It's much easier to blame the coach and hire another sacrificial lamb.

This is exactly what happens when the Trustees, BOR, or BOG, needs fruit basket turnover and sadly it lasts until you've had enough first class funerals among the big donors to have change.

Another reason to think Leach might leave Wazzu even if he doesn't go to Nebraska:

Quote:Kyle Bonagura
@BonaguraESPN

Bill Moos' departure is a result of growing friction between him/the WSU athletic department and Pres. Kirk Schulz.

12:58 PM - 15 Oct 2017
Quote:Kyle Bonagura
@BonaguraESPN

At least twice, Moos asked for a contract extension and was rebuffed, according to multiple sources.

12:59 PM - 15 Oct 2017
Quote:Kyle Bonagura‏
@BonaguraESPN

One source: “Kirk Schulz has been awful for athletics. Since he arrived, it has been tense and awkward and difficult.”

Mike Leach would do about as well as Rich Rod did in the Big Ten. Gimmick offenses eventually get figured out, defenses adjust.

At best, Mike Leach duplicate his sucess he has seen at TT and WSU, which is to compete for, but not win championships. Neb already had that with Bo Pelini.

If Bielema gets let go from Arkansas, would he/Nebraska look to hire him? He did extremely well at Wisconsin, and it has been a huge challenge to duplicate his style of play in the SEC.

I could also see him making a push for Les Miles.

I think the bloom is off the Bielema rose.

He gave himself too much credit for winning with much of the foundation that Barry Alvarez laid. It was Barry's system, Barry's coaching staff, etc. He let the idea of not being in the shadow of Barry push himself out of a really good thing at Wisconsin. His success (or lack there of) at Arkansas has pretty much proved that out.

Nebraska will probably make a run at Scott Frost and see where that goes. There might be Mike Leach rumors as well as Les Miles.

If Nebraska wants to go back to that "tough guy" type football could the name Greg Schiano crop up? He did a nice job rebuilding Rutgers. Might he be able to do the same with Nebraska?

I wonder if Neb could get somebody like Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. BK has had complaints about high academic standards at Notre Dame. He would not have that problem at Nebraska.

Why would they want Brian Kelly? He has had less success at Notre Dame than Pelini had at Nebraska. They might as well bring back Pelini.

Brian Kelly, uh, did get his team to the NCG one year, and just recently in 2015 got ND to the Fiesta Bowl. How many national championship games and BCS bowls did Pelini go to when he was the Nebraska coach?
