Football Class of 2018 Part Deux
Based on how big the first thread has gotten, I've created a second thread picking up where we left off.

RE: Football Class of 2018 Part Deux
Saw an article on Jeremiah Wood today on 247.

Quote:Pickerington Central is moving on to the second round of the Ohio state playoffs behind a strong senior class, including three-star, two-way athlete Jeremiah Wood.

With the versatility to play a number of positions, Wood has attracted several scholarship offers, although he is no hurry to make his final selection.

"As far as recruiting goes, I'm still keeping all my options open," Wood stated. "I'm still looking for the right school, but I have not taken any visits yet. I plan on taking all my visits after the season is over. I'm going to decide late in the process."

"I'm talking to Pittsburgh and they were in to see me practice this past week," he added. "Pitt is a school I would love to have an offer from, and they are showing interest."

"Cincinnati has offered and they were at practice recently as well," he continued. "My brother (Jamie Wood) played for Luke Fickell at Ohio State, and I know Coach Fickell really well. Cincinnati just might be the pace for me."

Wood played at a high level last Friday on both sides of the football in leading his team to an easy win. He is one of the leaders for Pickerington Central.

"Our team really focuses on our game, execute and do everything well," he explained. "I felt I played well in this game, and I messed up a few plays, so there are things I can work on."

"Playing here has been great, and I love playing with my fellow seniors," Wood said. "Our goal is the state championship, and we need to keep improving every week to get to that game."

Wood and his teammates will play in the second round of the playoffs this Friday evening against Hilliard Bradley.

Lol, 247 profile is a little out dated. Look at his primary recruiter.

He has had CBs to us since like 2016...his profile always seemed off to me, but the kid's a player. Typically when interest cools off like that it's a qualification issue.

This was my thought as well. It sounds like the staffing is staying in touch though so if he does qualify hopefully he's a bearcat.

Campbell County RB Alex Dowds commits as a preferred walk-on, per his twitter. Dowds rushed for over 1,400 yards this season for the Camels.

They have made a concerted effort on the PWO front. Shows we want as many new bodies as possible asap.

My thoughts as well...this is an easy way to get an extended look at someone without a scholarship commitment to potentially fill a hole.

Depends on the situation...most, if not all, PWO's don't get anything outside of whatever academic awards they receive based on qualifications and POTENTIALLY book stipends. That's all I got, and it was pretty typical across the board back then...but it was 10 years ago.

I'm guessing the benefit of being a PWO is that you know you have a guaranteed roster spot without having to go through tryouts, correct?

Essentially...the agreement for us (with Dantonio/Kelly) was that we were given a spot on the extended squad and practice squad for one year then had to earn it after that. That's typically the arrangement for most specialists outside of the major programs, either that or a grayshirt. I only worked as a PWO for one year then focused on Soccer/Engineering after that (since they were actually paying), so I didn't see how they were handled intimately, but by and large they were on the books for their own costs outside of maybe meals/books.

I might be off on this, but it may be an attempt to change the culture of the program. Under the old regime, the right hard working attitude may not have been a priority. I speculate that this is an attempt to get this type of player in the program.

I think you're pretty accurate. Willie Martinez brought it up at a recent Bearcat Faithful Lunch. Said they were trying to bring in local walk-ons who would otherwise probably be Division II level talent in order to spur more local interest in the program and get their foot in the door with various high schools.
I do think it helps the culture. A few years back I interviewed a guy who had worked during undergraduate school with the tO$U program. He said that the walk-ons were the absolute best guys to deal with. They appreciated everything they got and their opportunity to play at that level, while some of the very highly rated scholarship players seemed to take it all for granted.

That's the same mentality that Toledo has used. They always have anywhere between 10-20 kids from the metro area to build interest and because they know they'll work their tails off.

Nice article in the fish wrap about J'Von Hicks bringing "The Cardinal Way" to UC. Be sure to listen to the attached interview with Scott Springer.
