I would put a restriction on the total number of conferences at 32. I would then only take the conference tournament champion to the NCAA tourney. The two top finishers (that didn’t win the conference) compete in the 64 team NIT.

If your conference is too hard to win, find a new conference. The weaker conferences would surely allow some stronger programs with cash into field to help perpetuate the cash flow.

The problem with that is you're not inviting the best 32 teams to the tournament. If you seriously think the 2nd best team in the AAC is not as good as the conference tournament champion of the Big Sky, then we need to have an intervention. It may be the case this year where the 2nd best team in the AAC can and would whip virtually any team from any other conference, and you wouldn't let them compete for a championship because they didn't win one game?

The NCAA tournament should have the best teams competing for a championship. I do believe this means eliminating some entire conferences from Division 1. There's perhaps 20 conferences that regularly produce competitive teams.

I'd like to limit Jay Bilas but that isn't going to happen either.

Here's the rub, those schools with high school gyms aren't trying to compete with Kentucky but they have to play DI if they want to keep their other sports at that level as well. NCAA rules. So, you've got a solid DI lax or ice hockey program then your hoops are gonna play at that level too.

He specifically noted how "directional schools" should not be in this collective top Div I-A group.

Basically, he wants top schools to be able to horde all the top talent (vs it being spread out), plus, make it "ok" for those top schools to cheat so that he has less teams he needs to study about during the regular season or March Madness.

Wait, so rather than hold "power programs" accountable for the rules, instead the NCAA should force other schools to effectively disband their programs? Once that happens, of course, schools are automatically going to stop scheming to figure out ways to get the best talents to go there instead of one of the other "power programs," right?

So being a "power program" is a birth right, and none of those uppity new programs should be coming along to challenge the status quo, right?

Dumbest thing I've ever heard. Years ago, when Gonzaga and Butler weren't particularly strong programs, they would have been on the outside of this looking in. Plus, for me, half of the fun is watching schools I've never heard of winning (or at least putting a good scare) into the "power programs," whether it's FGCU's Dunk City a few years ago or that Northern Iowa ridiculous long range jumper to beat Kansas.

USFFan

I will never say Jay Bilas is always bright...as he just wants a select few schools to control basically all the talent without regard to rules or regulation.

Good point, but I believe if you split Division 1 into 1-A and 1-AA, like football used to be, then you can still have those other programs in Division 1 as well.

I don't think Wichita would be bubble. They went to the final 4 a couple years ago and have been kicking tail for many years. Top 5 now

Consolidating all the talent to the power programs? Sounds good to me! Trickle down e̶c̶o̶n̶o̶m̶i̶c̶s̶ recruiting always works.

I'm willing to bet Jay Bilas' version of "Top 120" will be Current P5 football schools, plus historically successful small basketball schools. It's always a drug deal with these guys.

No....even if the AAC is included.

Once they pair it down they will just keep pairing it down like they did with football.

Screw Bilas...
