And, uh, no. If you need me to dumb down the word choice a bit for you just let me know. I’ve had both dogs and kids, quite sure I can find your level to allow you to understand.

No problem, I’m nice like that.

Hunh.

What’s a thesaurus, and what would I need one for?

Is it a computer-like thingy? I’ve done pretty well thus far without.

alGore did me few favors...

And they will continue to lose subscribers, but its not politically driven... its technology driven. Cord cutters and Cord nevers are going to bankrupt ESPN. ESPN has extended itself with these tremendous contracts and is losing 20 million subscribers a year at at loss of $9 per month per subscriber. Its an old, non-sustainable business model.

If you think turning ESPN into a SJW network hasn't contributed to their subscriber loss, you are kidding yourself.

I'll agree with that too.....however, the changing of the guard from the cable box being the most likely option has been more damaging....

the espenis is embedded in most packages......that easily demonstrates overall loss from bundled content transitionimg to content on demand.....

man, there are days I only watch movies or youtube......I won't even turn the boob tube on.....

hell, I'll also toss in that 40% of every hour of viewing results in commercials.......that's more annoying than all the above....

While this is from a conservative website, I think it is a fair article on the 5 reasons ESPN is losing subscribers.

1. Cord Cutters
The phenomenon of television consumers refusing to pay cable giants for original content is real, and it's growing.

2. Bad Programming
ESPN has struggled for many years to find new, compelling content to draw in new viewers while keeping their existing viewers engaged.

3. Agenda driven programming
The brass at ESPN has taken a decidedly leftward tack in its programming. They either deny that it's happening, or deny that there is anything wrong with expressing tolerance and diversity.

4. Over payment for rights fees
ESPN has grossly overpaid for rights fees for the NFL and NBA, and is locked into those deals for several years.

5. Ratings for live sporting events are down
NFL ratings continue to drop. Partly because of the on the field product has gone down and also the player protests.

I think poor programming is the major reason. Part of that is due to poor product on the field in some areas, and part is due to the extent that they have replaced live (or recorded) action with (mostly left-leaning) human interest stuff.

I still have cable, but never watch the channel except for live college football if they have a game I'm interested in. I used to always have the TV on ESPN. So, while not a lost subscriber, I have hurt their ratings because of their SJW programming. Oh, and yes, I have been a Nielsen rater on several occasions.

yes I do, but I don't like them. I pay the government 1,000s a month. Seems like I waste money on a lot of things.

I think the poor programming is definitely due to obvious reaches for demographics. The 6 is such an obvious reach that it's patronizing. NFL Countdown is using hashtags and Snapchat avatars. Mike and Mike (God rest its soul), The 6, and Sportscenter all have sets that are so bleeding edge that it makes it dumb to watch.

ESPN still has some good things going but, as a lot of industry giants are feeling right now, they're too big to pivot and touch on their real problems.

All this being said, I still think a lot of the ratings loss is due to people getting more involved with politics and they're leaving ESPN for political coverage. The same hit of testosterone that people get from sports is easily replicated by politics.
