RE: Marshall UTSA Game Thread
My quick note to our AD.
Mike,
As I'm sure you are aware, I love Marshall and its sports programs, especially the football program. I believe they are an indispensable piece of the community, bringing pride and hope to an area that, quite frankly, doesn't have a whole lot to be proud of given the societal and economic conditions we face.
I have been blessed in life to make a decent living and, because I do believe in the value of Marshall and its athletics, have, and will continue, to support them. I am however gravely concerned about the current state and future prospects of the football program. Quite frankly the on the field product, primarily on the offensive side of the ball, is not what Marshall fans enjoy or have come to expect. I hear the frustration of the fans everywhere I go and discuss the team.
There is so much competition for entertainment dollars these days, it takes something extra to get people excited and to the stadium. I want to see the stadium full every bit as much the players, coaches and you do. They say winning cures everything, but I believe this year is a pretty good example of that not being the case. We had essentially nobody show up to support a 6-1 team.
A lot of folks, based on comments made out of the athletic department last year, thought significant changes were coming in regard to the offensive staff. That, obviously, did not happen. We retained an offensive co-ordinator that has produced an offense that has been ranked in the bottom half of FBS football in 5 of his eight seasons, three of those times outside of the top 100. To be frank, if not for Rakeem Cato, a very special talent, I'm not sure he would have ever produced an offense in the top half of the rankings. The fact that we play in the second weakest conference in FBS (based on all objective computer rankings) only magnifies our inadequacies on the offensive side of the ball.
Bottom line is that nobody likes to pay to watch paint dry, grass grow, or whatever analogy you want to use. Our 9-7 loss this evening, even if it had turned out to be a 7-6 victory, is only going to make attendance next week worse. Please help bring back "Marshall football" and the excitement that comes from being in the Joan with 28,000 instead of 12,000 actual fans in the stands.
Sincerely,
Go Herd!
