CUSA comeback: Will have at least 9 bowl eligible teams
with UTSA's win brings CUSA total bowl eligible teams to 8.
5-6 MTSU vs 5-6 ODU next week will make 9.
If 5-6 La Tech beats 6-5 UTSA next week that will make 10 bowl eligible teams for CUSA.
Helped along this is year are 3 big surprises with UAB, FAU and FIU having great seasons.

VERY likely they will have to. We're not going to have many more than 78 teams eligible.

Especially with the new rule that all 6 win teams must be choosen for a bowl spot regardless of bowl conference affiliations.

If La Tech defeats UTSA (which I think they should), CUSA will end up with 10 bowl teams.

CUSA is really feeding off the weak of the conference this year. And only needing to be 6-6 helps.

Rice, UTEP and Charlotte have combined for fewer wins than ECU.
Congrats to UAB, looking at an 8-4 regular season.

RE: CUSA comeback: Will have at least 9 bowl eligible teams
I think it is probably more a sign of mediocrity and low bowl eligibility requirements.
Bowl eligible today:
Florida Atlantic (8-3) - @ Charlotte
North Texas (8-3) - @ Rice
Marshall (7-4) - vs. Southern Miss
UAB (7-4) - vs. UTEP
Southern Miss (7-4) - @ Marshall
Florida International (6-4) - vs. Western Kentucky, vs. Massachusetts
UTSA (6-4) - @ Louisiana Tech
Western Kentucky (6-5) - @ Florida International
Not ineligible yet:
Louisiana Tech (5-6) - vs. UTSA
Old Dominion (5-6) - @ Middle Tennessee St
Middle Tennessee St (5-6) - vs. Old Dominion
Ineligible today:
Charlotte (1-10) - vs. Florida Atlantic
Rice (1-10) - vs. North Texas
UTEP (0-11) - @ UAB
Potential for 10 bowl eligible schools. Potential for up to 5 schools with only 6 wins. It helps that CUSA has 3 of the worst schools this season to pad their schedules.

actually guaranteed at least 6 with 7 wins(FIU/WKU play). Could have 4 teams with 8+ wins- have 2, guaranteed a 3rd, and UAB plays UTEP. Really not too bad this year.

Bottom of the conference Rice, Charlotte, and UTEP providing the middle of CUSA with 19 wins aided in getting more teams bowl eligible. Added to that, there is only 2 teams with 1 or less defeats--meaning the top of CUSA is pretty narrow this year. Basically, that left a lot of wins to be more evenly spread over a much broader middle of the conference. Lots of parity in CUSA this year resulted in a ton of bowl teams.

Correct. It has nothing to do with a CUSA comeback.

LOL...you guys are funny. All conferences prey off the weak teams for wins and have parity. We could say the same of the AAC (with ECU, Tulsa, Cincy, UConn..maybe even Tulane) and the MW (SJSU, Nevada, NM, Hawaii and AF)
Compared to the 5 and 6 bowl eligible teams they had in the past this is a big jump for them. You might want to check out the OOC records the bowls teams have also.

RE: CUSA comeback: Will have at least 9 bowl eligible teams
did some looking: SOS and rating numbers from Anderson Hester- all pre bowl numbers
2017 23-31 .439 SOS .396 rating (added UAB)
2016 20-32 .446 SOS .379 rating
2015 20-32 .450 SOS .383 rating (added Charlotte, lost UAB)
2014 24-28 .454 SOS .431 rating (added WKU, lost Tulane, ECU, Tulsa)
2013 20-36 .460 SOS .376 rating (added FAU,FIU, LT, NT, MTSU,UTSA, lost Memphis, Houston, UCF, SMU)
2012 12-36 .523 SOS .371 rating
2011 21-28 .483 SOS .440 rating
2010 20-28 .477 SOS .427 rating
2009 19-29 .496 SOS .434 rating
2008 18-30 .490 SOS .415 rating
so this year definitely 2nd best since the conference shifts. This year just raw record one of the better years in OOC play(more damning based on other years than it is credit for this year).

RE: CUSA comeback: Will have at least 9 bowl eligible teams
It's a little of everything.
Charlotte, Rice, UTEP have provided 19 wins. A couple epically bad teams help nudge 5-7 and 4-8 teams into 6-6 or 7-4.
But 10 teams went at least 2-2 in non-conference. Bowl eligibility helps those who help themselves. If you can get 2 non-conference wins going .500 in conference is eligible, get three and need only 3-5 to hit eligible.
Put together three stinker teams with 10 teams hitting no worse than 2-2 in non-conference and a lot get eligible.

There is no doubt that cutting back on the pay day body bag games helped as well. But if you think parity hasnt been a factor, your not paying attention. The ultimate would be every school goes 4-4 conference play. Nine CUSA teams are within one game of 4 conference wins. The Big10 has 5 teams within one game of 4 conference wins. The AAC has 5. The SEC has 7. The MAC and MW each has 6. The Pac-12 has just 4. The ACC and SEC are close with 8 and 7 respectively. Parity in CUSA is a huge factor in getting so many teams bowl eligible. CUSA is 23-31 in OOC play--so its not like they tore it up outside of the conference. That places them above the Sunbelt and behind the MW/MAC/AAC in OOC play (the AAC is the only G5 with a winning OOC record at this time).

Let's beat our chest about mediocrity!
Jeez look at WKU's wins.
Eastern Kentucky (FCS)
Ball State (2-9)
UTEP (0-11)
UNCC (1-10)
ODU (5-6)
MTSU (5-6)
Shoot the best team in the conference FAU went 1-3 on OOC with the only win being over an FCS team.

Agree with all the posters pointing out the three terrible teams in C-USA. But the real comeback is what C-USA does with this bowl season opportunity. Most of the projections have us playing 3 or 4 AAC programs in bowls. It will be hard to argue against a comeback year if C-USA posts a winning bowl record.

Clearly, the Sagarin ratings aren't impressed with CUSA's performance this year. They are ranked as the 10th strongest conference, ahead of only the Belt among FBS conferences, and behind FCS Missouri Valley.

Bump. C-USA now 4-2 in bowls, with a win against each of the other G5 conferences. We are Vegas underdogs in the last three, though.
