Houston market
Rice has made a great (FC) hire and is a perfect fit as a private school in one of the divisions in the current P4. Resources are there, and the footprint opens Texas to the B10, PAC12 or ACC. A Rice add to the SEC enhances the Texas footprint for the SEC and adds a second private for the conference.

RE: Rice to SEC, B10, PAC12, ACC
Rice is too tiny for a P5 IMO.

TCU joined a P5 but they are in Dallas-FW market, largest in the state and top producer of football talent. Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M are all several hours from the Dallas-FW market. TCU's competition locally is SMU which has a similar institutional profile.

Houston market is different with Texas A&M much closer and the University of Houston in the market. Rice looks tiny athletically by not just P5 standards but also University of Houston standards.

I'd even question Rice as a backfill to the AAC if Houston left. AAC already has 3 private schools in it (Tulsa, SMU, Tulane) pulling the conference down in FB.

If you can package yourself with Texas plus two more to the Pac that could work. Huge if, though.

Rice could be another Duke, Northwestern or Stanford but they have to care first.

Rice is an academic powerhouse. It is potentially a Duke, Stanford or Northwestern. But so far it's performance is more like a Tulsa or Tulane.

But no question if they invested in Athletics like Stanford and Northwestern did, they would be the very top choice of G5 for a P5 slot. But the window is closing, the next realignment is about 7 years away. This means they need to make that decision to throw $100M at it in the next five years right now. I suspect that wont happen.

Replace Baylor with Rice and there would be a PAC-16 today.

If you're comparing to Stanford or TCU: Each of those programs have received more than $100 million in donations to athletics over the last 10 years or so.

For both the investment to upgrade their programs preceded the donations. Stanford made that decision in the 1990s.and it took a decade before it started to pay off, and they rose from the P12 cellar.

Rice has the same kind of high end donor base that would contribute to athletics if there was success and emphasis on it. Right now that emphasis on excellence in athletics is not there.

But note, I am also saying the clock is ticking, and they are running out of time, especially when you consider the lag before you see real success on the court and in the field.

Here's the thing: If Rice goes 2-10, you still have a great academic school in a fun city to visit that has a LOT of FBS tradition. It's not an undesirable bottom feeder.

Houston is larger than DFW. If you add in the metro areas, DFW edges Houston.

Former Rice AD appears to be the new hire AD at Texas. Austin now has a former Rice hire as football HC, Herman, baseball HC, Pierce, and AD, Del Conte!

Rice is laughable. They are a million miles to be P5 ready. I see more potentials for UTSA, UTEP, West Texas A&M, Tarleton State and some others be more aggressive for their athletics departments than Rice.

Bayou bucket 2025, Rice (west PAC16) v. UH (east by 3 miles $EC) in the annual cross conference battle for Harris County supremecy? C2 like jfk understands that a rising tide lifts all boats!

Rice is a great school. More Ivy League than P5. They are not going to spend the money necessary to compete with the bigger named schools. They are not going to any of the above mentioned conferences no matter how many times people keep saying it on this board.

Rice is certainly the top academic university in Texas and one of the best in America, but in football, not so much.

Rice won 1 game this season, and moving to a Power conference is all about football. Rice is the smallest FBS program, and because of that small exclusive fan base, they have serious issues with attendance. The power conferences are all about money. Rice monetary value on the field isn't close to what those Power conferences are looking for. The only chance Rice will ever have of getting a promotion to a Power conference is if a very wealthy, or a group of very wealthy supporters, open their wallets and buy them into a better situation.

Agree with C2

Rice could be one of the most desireable properties in all of college sports

They just have to give a damn and put some of those billions into athletics. And honestly, not even FB. If Rice decided to make itself into the Duke of the Central US, there is nobody else more primed by location. They would be on everyone's shortlist because their academic reputation is that good

agreed - they would be THE ideal package with UT, OU and KU for the B1G if they ever decided to really invest more into sports outside of baseball.
