D2 cheyney University Drops Football

Any FCS schools that have them on their schedules in the future will have to find another opponent. I do think we may see some movements among D2 schools in the future.

Cheney is an HBCU and supporters fear even worse. It's enrollment is now less than 800, down from a couple thousand.

The one PASSHE school that has consistently expanded recently is West Chester St, growing to more than 17,0000. West Chester isn't that far from Cheyney.

RE: D2 cheyney University Drops Football
West Chester wants nothing to do with Cheyney, especially if it means some kind of hybrid governance for the two to keep Cheyney still separate in some respect.

It's not just Cheyney that's hurting bigtime, but Lincoln, too. One's PASSHE, the other's a Commonwealth. The two should (have) merge(d), but, "tradition" runs deep at both of these places. Neither have any clue how to run themselves, but, to be fair, the area is so over-saturated with schools, and so many ailing and failing ones look at the two of those schools' populations and desperately recruit them.

Football was an easy casualty there, though, at Cheyney. This is the school that just saw $30 million in debt forgiveness.

So they've decided they don't want those 84 students or the tuition and room/board they pay? Even assuming that they grant the 36 maximum scholarships, that's 48 students. Seems like a pretty poor decision.

RE: D2 cheyney University Drops Football
I don't doubt that the team has been dropped but there are a lot of people still waiting on an official announcement from the school. Their website still has two women's sports listed that were most likely to have been dropped about 2 years ago. teamvsn, you may see them in NAIA very soon; I know you need more members in that part of the country. I think it's possible that D2 will terminate their membership; and, they are on probation until August 2019. Without football they have only 9 total sports (4m/5w) and only 1 men's team sport; D2 requires 10 total sports and 2 team sports for each gender. The men's sports remaining are basketball, cross country, and track & field (indoor/outdoor); basketball is a team sport while cross country/track are individual sports. You were being very overly generous on the scholarship number teamvsn, in 2016-17 football had a total equivalency scholarship count of ...

3 . 2 1

Yes, the decimal point is in the right place and used big font size and space to make sure it was read correctly. To be fair though, Cheney is one of 9 PSAC schools with less than 10 scholarships that season and no one was at 36 (Gannon - 34.98 is the highest).

RE: D2 cheyney University Drops Football
What are they on probation for? I am not certain that the NAIA would allow a probationary school from another association to join.

The NAIA does indeed want more members in the northeast, but at the moment there would be few nearby programs to schedule for them. Just Washington Adventist in Baltimore. Maybe if they could pull some other PSAC schools along with them.

I misread your post, I thought their probation was with the NCAA. It is with their accreditor:

I don't think the NAIA would take them as a full member while on accreditation probation. Maybe as an associate member until they clear up the problems.

didn't you previously 'report' Cheyney was expected to announce D1 move & enter MWC with intentions of joining PAC12?

No, you read it right, the entire athletic program is on NCAA probation for 5 years in addition to the accreditation situation. Here are the links:

http://cheyneywolves.com/ Go to bottom of page, click [infraction report]. NCAA requires an infraction report on the school's athletic website.

The bigger story is that the university is struggling to keep its doors open. I think there are less than a 1,000 students attending Cheyney.

You'd be surprised how many schools there are out there with less than 1000 students. It's doable, but many of them do it by attracting student athletes, not blowing them off. I don't know how to find the ones in the NCAA but you can see the ones in the NAIA here:
https://www.playnaia.org/remote/schools.php?viewAll
(click on the Enrollment column to sort by enrollment. The first page shows some without numbers, but I'm pretty sure all of those (except William Carey and UVI) are under 1000 as well).

John Chaney should buy this college since he coached there.

David State this is the real direction all your FCS and D2 callups are moving....down not up.

Post threads of FBS/FCS schools moving down and you will be a lot more popular.
