which is more reason for Gonzaga to move out before that happens.

Yep...but they don't have many options.

What are the odds Gonzaga comes back to Earth after Few retires? Besides Dan Monson's short run prior, what evidence is there Gonzaga will sustain and be worthy of moving all their athletic programs to another conference?

MWC has only 11 all sports members. They would seem to be a logical replacement for Hawaii.

Logical if they wanted in, which they probably don't.

But the Big East makes no sense for them. The wear and tear on their basketball team would show up in more losses and more academic problems.

Little evidence, which is why they should try and move up ASAP.

They'd have 8/9 road games a year and the Big East Tournament. And they wouldn't be consecutively. On average, they'd have 4 road games in December/January and 4 in February/March, plus the Big East Tournament. Many of their games would be no farther east than Lake Michigan. The rest are home games and most of the other teams would only come out west once every two years.

It obviously wouldn't be a great fit but it isn't like it can't be done.

RE: Gonzaga/Big East
The problem I see is that it wouldn’t be solely a men’s basketball move. That’s why the Big East makes little sense in the big picture, which is what the school president is going to be looking at.

The Mountain West angle is interesting, but I maintain, I don’t think Gonzaga needs to move to be relevant. The WCC became stronger than the MVC due to the addition of BYU and the loss of Creighton.

The Mountain West lest we forget has 11 basketball schools, the perfect number for scheduling in the 20 game conference season age.

WCC should be targeting 11 for itself. USC is thinking about independence since they have the Notre Dame series. Tired of building a FB rivalry with Utah which is completely to the advantage of the Utes.

Add USC to the WCC playing private California schools and I don't see Gonzaga going anywhere.

Please, USC isn't going indy with their sports in the WCC. If they didn't want to play Utah they would have blocked their entrance into the conference. I think they rather play Utah in all sports instead of BYU.

USC is not thinking about independence. A guy on the internet conducted a thought exercise on his blog is not the same thing as genuine interest.

Gonzaga is a school that the MWC should be exploring, especially as they enter TV contract talks. This would be a bigger pickup than Wichita State by the American.

(Not convinced there is enough synergy there for it to go anywhere, but doesn't hurt to talk.)

RE: Gonzaga/Big East
Grab the trifecta of MWC going after Gonzaga, Saint Mary's and BYU for all sports. BYU football as well, and grab a NDSU for all sports or football only. Either way. MWC could be a power in both football and basketball.
