I read through that, but did not think about it carefully enough. You are almost certainly correct.

It may be unfair, but no tie breaker between two three-win teams is UNFAIR.

This is the part where somebody asks me for a link, and before AlmadenMike can track it down for us I post this:
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/c-us...eakers.pdf
2.b. Reads:
Quote:b. When comparing records against a single team or a group of teams, the higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group is unequal (e.g., 2-0 is better than 3-1); in the case of tied percentages vs. the team or group of 1.000 or .000 the following shall apply: 2-0 is better than 1-0; 0-1 is better than 0-2.

MBB: Quest for the Postseason
Rice does not currently “control its destiny” in this race as a UTEP win at ODU tonight would give the Miners the inside track on the tiebreaker even if we beat them. If ODU wins at home tonight as expected, though, Rice then would control its destiny (regardless of tonight’s outcome at Tudor)

ETA: I was mistaken when looking at UTEP’s schedule. They play LATech and USM twice (not ODU). But with LATech still 2 games ahead of FIU& FAU (the teams Rice plays twice) then the LATech comparison will likely rule, and if not, then USM next most likely. That means a 3-15 tiebreaker still almost certainly (but not 100%) still goes to Rice on the 0-1 vs 0-2 against LAT and USM.

However what’s critical to our chances is actually beating UTEP when they come around. If UTEP were to only win that game (and no other) then Rice would still have to go 3-1 against the rest of our schedule to finish ahead of them!

Also, FAU won tonight which effectively puts them out of reach with 5 wins. It’s us or UTEP for that 12 seed unless Charlotte wakes up. Sure would like to get one on the road next week though.

Also see my post 2 up, I looked at the schedules again and we still don’t truly ‘control our destiny’. Well, we did for an hour or so after UTEP lost but we handed that baton back after our WKU loss tonight.

UTEP really needs to just pack up shop as a department. By god, they are awful - a beaten up rudderless ship floating in a typhoon.

Their fans over on the conference board are rooting for us to win the 12th spot to Frisco so they can get started with interviewing the HC replacement ASAP. I think there might be light at the end of the tunnel for them, but first they need to start digging that tunnel up, rather than further down...

Rice (last month, to FAU): nobody comes in OUR house and gets an easy win. Game winner at :03 left...
FAU (three seconds later) You left too much time on the clock, yo, FAU FTW..
Fast forward to last night at FAU..
Rice led double digits most of the night before FAU closed on a 13-0 or something run and took it to OT. Tied it up again after we fouled with couple seconds left but then AKO banked in the game winner at the buzzer. Rice responds!!!

An hour or so later... UTEP comes out of nowhere to toss their hat back in the ring with a last minute game winner vs LATech.

Weird, all of a sudden these guys are playing like they WANT it.
USM and FIU are safely in (not clinched but safe) at 6 wins
FAU 5-10 looked good a week ago but may need one more win to qualify
UTEP 4-11 Now has a tiebreaker inside track as long as LATech (7 wins) stays ahead of the rest of the sub-500 crowd.
Rice 3-12 still looking up at UTEP and hosts them next week, but realistically has to get another win for 5 to even have a chance.
Charlotte 1-14. Sorry Charli. We just did the math and you are officially done. The ONLY scenario where you could get in a tie for 12th is a 3-way tie with Rice and UTEP. And you are 0-2 against that pair.

So the last two tickets are basically down to Rice, UTEP, and, yes, FAU.

Tomorrow: FAU hosts UNT, UTEP hosts USM, and Rice is at FIU.

RE: MBB: Quest for the Postseason
Who to root for Tomorrow:
1.(Obviously) root for Rice to beat FIU (we beat them once, we need to beat them again) 6pm tip
1b. Root for UNT to beat FAU on the road. A 3-way tie at 5-13 would send FAU and Rice to the Dance and leave UTEP at home (based on the 3-way head-to-head-to-head) 6pm tip

2. Root for UTSA to knock off LaTech. Less crucial, but if we can get USM and LaTech even at 7-10 then USM could pass them on the final week (and then miraculously give Rice a tiebreaker edge that I don't know that we deserve, but we'd take). 7pm Tip

3. Root for USM to TCB on the road at UTEP (can't let UTEP get another one. We can, but we don't want it to happen) 8pm Tip

And while we're at it, root for MTSU and WKU both at home to win, MTSU is a near-lock for an at-large and WKU might be able to get in the conversation if they beat ODU. Any way we can get an at-large bid for C-USA will help Rice and all the other schools in the league.
what did I leave out? oh yeah, root Marshall to beat Charlotte. Charlotte cannot take our place in Frisco, nor can they affect our tiebreaker situation. But right now they haven't clinched the #14 spot. And from where we sit at #13 right now, I'd love for them to have it all to their selves :)

Ok i got excited and called it “The Dance” in my last post. It’s not “the dance”. We don’t go to dances. Not yet anyway. But we do wish to at least finagle an invitation to “the happy hour social”.

MBB: Quest for the Postseason
Last night was a bit of a kick in the teeth for the old postseason hopes. But, you know me, there is always a bright side. In this case, it’s that only 3 games have to go our way to advance. Two of those are ours, and we have both at home. The third will go our way if the homestanding favored team wins. So there you go! One week left, and our path is clear!

And UTEP beats Southern Miss tonight.

If Rice beats both UTEP & UTSA next week and UTEP also loses to North Texas, Rice would have the tiebreaker with the better record vs. UTSA.

OT but a good article on how to build a juggernaut with defensive prowess and team first orientation. If the Owls played even slightly better Defense it would have added several wins this year.
