Lol. SOS is a joke. Do whatever you want. Schedule 4 P5’s in OOC (assuming you can even get 4 P5’s a year to say yes). It won’t matter. You’ll still be playing 4, 5, or even six fewer P5 teams than every P5 team in America. No matter what you do or who you play in OOC, a G5 really can’t ever have an SOS higher than about 65-70 because (by definition) a G5 has two thirds of its games every season against G5 teams in conference play. In other words—a G5 will play 4 P5 teams at a maximum—most every P5 team plays at least 9 P5 teams. Thus, any G5 schedule is always going to start out ranked behind every P5 schedule, Notre Dame, and likely behind BYU. So, 68 is probably the top G5 schedule in any given year.

This year, UCF was ignored because of its SOS at #72. What nobody ever points out is UCF had one of the top 5 toughest schedules in the G5.

My favorite talking point by the CFP excuse makers who claim the G5 is not shut out of the CFP because of the Extreme emphasis on SOS is—-“Had Houston run the table in 2016, well that schedule was good enough to get in”. I’m guessing everyone spouting that excuse never bothered to look up the 2016 Houston schedule ranking. The 2016 Houston schedule was ranked #76th—-it was actually worse than the 2017 UCF SOS.

There's a critical difference: Houston 2016 had wins over two very highly ranked P5 teams, Big 12 Champ Oklahoma, and a Louisville team that was #3 and in the hunt for the playoffs when Houston beat them in mid-November.

If you have a very soft overall schedule, then the main doubt about you is "can you play with the real good teams", meaning specifically, top P5 teams. Before the playoffs, UCF had nothing like that on their resume, their best wins were extremely close, arguably lucky, wins over USF and Memphis, two G5 teams lingering around the bottom of the top 25. Their best P5 win was over a bad Maryland team.

Totally different circumstance.
