I've never paid any attention before but it is almost awkward to have these sort of season ending looking festivities after winning a semi final.

Well, Bama won the Sugar bowl in a year that mattered. Wasn't that long ago that it meant more than a National Championship.
Remember, you had 2 mules from the Pac and big in the Rose and the freak show that was always the orange.
Sugar Bowl is a pretty big deal.

Have you ever watched the NHL conference championship trophy presentations? This is what these semifinal bowl trophy presentations are kind of like.
There's a superstition in the NHL that the winning players are not supposed to touch the trophy, because they're playing to win the Stanley Cup, not the conference final. The winning team's captain usually stands next to the trophy when they take photos but not close enough where he might accidentally touch it.
