The link. Scroll down to #8.

I get the feeling more people on the board hate Clay Travis than tolerate him, but it's a data point.

(I don't see an "8 Team Playoff!" thread on the front page, so here it is. I know there are a couple of threads that have drifted into playoff debates, but this one has playoff in the title.)

I think he lost a lot of cred with the whole TN football coach thing. He kinda came off like an ass to me and I had no rooting interest.

That being said.

People can huff & puff all they want but a 8 Team playoff isn't likely unless....

1) The P5 deems it necessary. If, as some have speculated, the P5 becomes the P4 in 5-6 years, it will NEVER happen. Nothing will change or be done until then.

2) The networks deem it necessary. If, as speculated above, those networks manage to realign into a P4, it will NEVER happen.

RE: Clay Travis is on board with 8-team playoff, P5 G5 autobid, 2 wild cards
Ive really advocated this for a long time. I think its a system that provides access without spoiling the regular season. The 5 P5 champs get in as does the top G5 champ. That means for the P5---winning your conference means something. It also means every G5 is not eliminated before the first snap of the season. Then, it also gives a second chance at life for deserving teams that had one bad day or a key injury (as wel as an access point for independents). It also guarantees the committee's number 1 and #2 will always get in despite upsets. Frankly, I think its a system that could stay in place unchanged for 100 years.

The committee had a chance to make this current system work by being fair and equitable. They couldnt help themselves. They stacked the committee with all P5 reps and found an excuse to eliminate any G5 ever. They blew it by being so heavy handed and tin eared. Kirby Holcutt litterally sounds like a buffoon when he tries to defend the committee. Nobody buys the tripe he's slinging.

I could see an 8 team playoff in the next contract.

The QFs would be played at the home fields of the top 4 teams the week after the Army Navy Game when bowls like the Las Vegas bowl are currently played. The remaining playoff format would remain.

You could even put the QF losers in a NY6 bowl on New Years if desired to help maintain the current format of the non playoff portion of the CFP contract

Everybody said the same about the 4 team playoff as well. The knights win along with the B1G and PAC getting left out has added more fuel to the fire.

Well, Tennessee (a program with a national title in the last 25 years that fills a 100,000 seat stadium) was about to hire Greg Schiano. Penn State black mark aside, I think it's fair to say that coaching-wise, Greg Schiano is no Bert Bielema, who got chewed up and spit out in the SEC.

And now Tennessee has a hotshot young coach with 2 NCs' as a coordinator, was hired by Saban a couple of times, by Jimbo Fisher and by Marc Richt. And the program is no longer the fiefdom of Jimmy HAslem.

Travis DID have a rooting interest, in Vols football, and Vols football looks to be in much better shape than it did before a fan uprising that Travis stoked, followed or led depending on how you look at it.

In fairness, though, people were talking about going to a college football playoff for as long as I can remember (back to the 1980s.)

"NEver" is a long time, true, but "eventually" can be a really long time waiting.

I think that is the sticky part for sure. If top 4 host, and losers still get a crack at the bowls, then timing gets sketchy if these games are played the week after Army v Navy. However, could you imagine Alabama traveling to Boise St for the first round of the playoffs? It might be the most watched college football game ever. It would be a blast and would do the sport good.

If the next CFP contract can't produce a big raise, I would wager 8 will be the carrot offered.

Taking issue with who gets hired as a coach is par for the course.

The problem I had was while stoking that fire, he also stoked up some ugliness that frankly had no room in the discussion. Whether you like Schiano or not, to try and link him to what happened at PSU even though he was never implicated was character assassination at best and slander at worst.

One can disagree with a decision while not being disagreeable.

It is sticky. Ideally the QFs would be at bowls, but logistics gets in the way of that

The QF losers don't have to play in an extra game as logistics for selling bowl tickets to a team that was just eliminated from the playoffs would be rough.

I don't see any reason why on December 16th this year why you couldn't have had UCF @ Clemson, Auburn @ Oklahoma, USC @ Georgia, and Ohio St @ Alabama

A fire that will pretty much be extinguished if the P5 becomes the P4.

Four spots, four conference champs, there will be no need or desire to change from their standpoint.

Only if the next round of realignment in 2025ish doesn't result in a P4 would there be a possibility of an 8-team CFP.

If you want to insist that one G5 champion get an auto bid to a playoff, then you are prepared to accept that four such champions don't. The same arguments one might make to include one G5 champ are just as valid for including all G5 champs.

If you are in the camp of those that think only conference champions should be included in a playoff, then why not just say that the four highest ranked conference champions, by some consistent metric, are in, regardless of "P" or "G" status? Don't have any at-large entries at all.

In the current system, there are no autobids. Works for me.

In all sports, playoffs expand for one reason: Money. It's why the pro leagues have expanded their playoffs, and why the NCAA hoops tourney has grown in size as well.

It's also why college football expanded from 2 teams (BCS) to 4 teams (CFP).

If the money is right, college football will expand to 8 teams, if it isn't, it won't.

Either auto bids for all 10 conferences or an 8 team playoff system with the 8 best teams, regardless of conference, IF the playoff committee equally represents all conferences (one rep from each conf). Otherwise, what's the point.
