Your enemies will always call you by the name you hate most. On SMUt's ponyfans board, they almost exclusively call us by NTSU, because they think it irks us.

As a resident of central Texas and a former teacher of students who attend(ed) UTSA, I have long felt that the school needed a name change that identified it more with the city and less as a sub-school of UT-Austin. The University of San Antonio would be something the community could probably rally around better.

UTEP and UAB are probably too established at this point for a name change, but I do love those Birmingham jerseys.

Should Western change our name to Bowling Green University?

Texas Western is a pretty cool name. Why was it changed?

It really does not matter if your school goes by your city name or an alphabet soup. We still will not be ranked high enough to ever be invited to the 4 team football playoff Even if you go undefeated (See UCF)

It also won't help becoming more than a one bid basketball league,

I hear there was a thread on WKU name changes on haven but never read it. Kentucky Commonwealth, Cherry-- I still take WKU. There isn't a Kentucky Tech to the best of my knowledge, though. That has a nice ring.

Hmm. There’s already a Bowling Green State in Ohio, and Kentucky Tech is the name of the vo-tech system. I like Western’s name and logo though. I grew up watching them play, and they were on my short list of schools to attend for undergrad.

I went to Austin Peay for grad school. Now there’s a name...let’s go peay? Whatever works I suppose. I’m just glad they won a few games in football this year. They had a horrible streak for a couple of years or three.

AP? That's a cool abbreviation.

Also Governors is a great nickname. It just sucks that they're a low school on their system's totem pole, right?

TSU is the bottom based on academic reputation, but Austin Peay is below schools like ETSU with a medical school, TN Tech with the engineering program, and Memphis. Even Middle has doctoral programs where Peay doesn’t. APSU is a teaching institution not a true research institution. Mostly known for nursing and education programs. It was fine for business, which was my program area. Fort Campbell has a big partnership with the school, being so close.

The best sports tradition was the “show your peay-ness” shirts that everyone had back in the day. Those have been banned on campus now. If you wear it to a game they’ll kick you out.

If I remember correctly, the official name was Texas Western College of the University of Texas. The University of Texas system was reorganized in 1967 and UTEP became the official name. Bad timing because Texas Western had just won the mbb national championship the year before.

UTEP was referred to in a joke by Johnny Carson on the tonight show as the "University of Texas at Intercepted Paso" due to losing. Maybe we should try that until UTEP starts winning a few football games.

Friend of mine who went to a D3 school told me this story and swears it's true: Some fan made a sign for a basketbal game that read SHOW ME YOU'RE NUTS. Only he chose wrong between you're and your; normally a simple stupid mistake, now ... well, at least it was still grammatically correct?
