RE: Spring Game 2018
Good read, it's often forgotten the mental toll an injury such as that takes on a college student.

I'm hopeful, for him and us, that we see some of the pre-injured Funderburke this season. Him and Nate are All-Conference talents, and Giles has proven himself more than capable. That's a pretty scary three headed monster when healthy. Not to mention returning contributor Anderson makes it a deep position.

Anyone familiar with what the "flex" position is all about? Are we running a new defensive scheme next season or is that the same as the "nickleback" we've used for the past few years?

At any rate our LB unit is going to be very strong next season

Nice to see a Kinder on the top of the WR depth chart. He’s a very reliable and athletic player. Find a QB and this group could be very productive.

And....he's from West By-the-Grace-of God Virginia so that makes him extra special.

He is a tremendous kid, hard worker. He’ll get open, he’ll be where he’s supposed to be and he’ll catch it. He’s also very durable, gotta be healthy to create the depth we need to get through the CAA.

Spring Game 2018
I hope Mague gets in the mix more this season. With his size and blocking ability, I could see him at TE on passing downs, too.

Also, we lost a few great ones on the OL, so really hoping guys step up to fill their shoes. A lot of them have gameday experience so that helps.

Our receivers will get open but an inexperienced QB is going to need protection and a strong running game to be successful. God willing, JL will identify a QB early and give him an honest chance to cement a starting job throughout the season.

Mague will get his plays, he’s a big strong kid, athletic. A simplified offense will help his progression along with the other young receivers.

I am very curious to see how the QB question is answered. We’ll see, but one is better than the others right now. That could change, but because of this, I predicted that answer won’t be decided until the fall.

If one QB is better than the others now, why wouldn't that decision be made this spring, since all of these guys will have had at least two springs in the program??

The first reason is because it’s my opinion, which doesn’t mean a thing. It’s just an opinion. I could be totally wrong.

Second there’s still time for others to improve.

Third, sometimes the right thing to do is the hardest thing to do because it’s not the popular thing to do and the right thing to do never happens. Again, just my opinion.

Who is a standout on the DL? We lost Ahola and Isaiah Stevens- big holes to fill

Bill Murray and Gavin Johnson are outstanding. Will Kiely was a terror as a true freshman, and is bigger. Joe Suarez is experienced and talented. Nick Ridpath also experienced. Graydon Campbell has developed well at DT after switching back and forth from OL. Rfr. Carl Fowler is bigger, and can go at either DE or DT, and Bryden Reed also looks promising. This group should be a team strength.

Will Kiely is quick enough to play both inside or outside especially on passing downs the kid is a beast. Looking like bill and Will on inside and Gavin Johnson and Fowler on outside?

Joe Suarez probably opposite Johnson.

Spring Game 2018
It makes a lot of sense for the staff to identify a starter in April and keep that decision close to the vest. That guy may sustain an injury and not start in September - you want all of the guys to keep pushing to win the spot - and players can improve quite a bit over 5 months.

Nice to be mentioned but I hate we are on that list.

Question: are practices open, generally? If so, has anybody on here been out the to watch. Would be interested to hear someone’s firsthand take. I’m sure there will be a story or two next week leading up to the spring game but that will all be coachspeak.
