Media idea: AAC, MWC, CUSA, BYU on NBC Sports
Opinions on if the following lineup of schools could get ratings for NBC-SN when their soon to be expired media contracts are available: AAC, MWC, CUSA and BYU.
40 schools from Connecticut to Hawaii for the country to follow throughout the year on NBC-SN.
Recognizable Football names like UCF, Houston, Boise, San Diego St and BYU.
Recognizable Basketball names like Uconn, Cincinnati, Wichita St and UNLV.
Throw a few games on NBC to sweeten the pot. People are tired of espn...could this lineup offer a decent alternative for college football, basketball and baseball viewers?
I’d say it would be a nice compliment to the Olympics and Notre Dame for NBC.

People of tired of ESPN? You mean non-sports watchers that are tired of paying for it?

Putting UCF vs BYU on NBC, won't equal the ratings of Oklahoma St vs Iowa St on ABC.

Those leagues aren't with NBC because NBC knows it won't deliver the ratings it wants. Notre Dame fans aren't sticking around after/before the game to see MWC and CUSA action.

Boise State And BYU may still be as ESPN's property. Boise State might go Independent in football because they make more money with a single contract that they can;t get with a MWC contract with NBC sports.

Ive said for a while that there is money to be made in becoming the network of record for G5 football on Saturdays. Do it right.

Start with a saturday "Game Day" type show from a college campus location. Do a daily show recapping news from the G5. Treat the G5 as seriously as ESPN treats the P5.

To me its like what Fox News did. They looked at the TV News landscape and noticed that conservatives were largely ignored. In fact, when conservatives were not ignored on national news, it was because they were being laughed at. Fox realized that conservatives made up around half the audience and chose to cater their news to that ignored group. Fox News is now the top cable news network.

Fox, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, and CBS are all blanketing the P5 with coverage. Go where they arent. Engage the ignored G5 audience. That audience is probably close to a third of the college football audience and they are completely ignored (or lauged at when not being ignored).

Go wall to wall with G5 coverage on NBC-Sports on Saturdays. Use a G5 game to lead into or follow the Notre Dame game on NBC Broadcast. The G5 is somewhere between 25-35% of the total college football audience...thats a large college educated affluent audience just begging to find a TV home. That group buys detergent and Toyota's too. Truth be told--CBS-Sports is in the best position to execute this strategy. They already have the rights to games in the AAC, MW, MAC, and CUSA. They just need to buy some Sunbelt games and to get serious about doing a Saturday road show.

Because CUSA, AAC, MWC, BYU media contracts are almost up. Sun Belt still has several years to go with their current ESPN contract no? The MAC is locked up with ESPN playing Wednesday games for another decade, so they are out.

Disagree. I think BYU vs UCF on NBC would do better than Iowa St vs Oklahoma St. This is coming from someone who's a native Iowan and lived in Oklahoma for 2 years and has been to many college games in both Ames and Stillwater.

Premier is over by around noon (due to its European time zone). NASCAR time trials for the Sunday race are a HUGE ratings loser. I know I checked NBC (Broadcast) one Saturday during the season just to see what they were showing. It was an auto auction. When I checked the listings--the auto auction was 3 hours long. NBC is getting creamed on Saturdays. G5 football would be a huge boost to the Saturday NBC-Sports and NBC lineups. Other than Notre Dame football--they essentially have nothing.

I think an alliance with the MWC might make more long term sense.

That ship has sailed. I'm not talking about an alliance conference or an alliance media deal. I'm saying that if NBC secured the rights for AAC, MWC, CUSA, BYU they'd have 40 schools from coast to coast who'd generate ratings. AttackCoog says 25 to 35 percent of the fan base would follow them. I'm saying close to 50%.--if done right. An NBC game day each week and lots of promotion. Big 10, 12 and SEC fans love football. They'd watch this too, because they love the GAME. Just like I watch other schools play when I don't have a rooting interest. Because I love the game.

This would be like Fox News was when it rolled out in the late 90's. Ignored by CNN (ESPN) Then mocked by CNN (ESPN)Then hated by CNN (ESPN) Thrn kicking the living Shite out of CNN (ESPN) All the while generating ratings and proving that the P5 thing is more hype than reality. For all those who dislike ESPN....lets push this to happen!!!
Right now the cartel posters are ignoring me. Can't wait for the first cartel 5 fan to mock me. Then fight me. Then I win.

RE: Media idea: AAC, MWC, CUSA, BYU on NBC Sports
If the money offered in such a situation by NBCSN is equal to or better than what ESPN is paying, it's a deal.

1) It would be an improvement in ratings over just about anything on that channel, except English Premier League Soccer. It may not be blockbuster ratings in the beginning, but the ratings would be better than what NBCSN is pulling in now, and better than what many weeknight games earn.
2) At this level, the promotional value to these conferences from an association with ESPN is already much less than what a conference like the SEC receives. It can be argued that the MAC has lost as much in attendance/etc. from moving their late season games to weeknight as they have gained in national exposure from MACtion.
3) It gives the G5 conferences an opportunity to move their games off of weeknights and back to Saturday. This provides an opportunity to restore the Saturday football experience and all that entails. This is a huge thing for the fans of these conferences.
4) They would need to work out the streaming details, as they would move away from ESPN3. Streaming is not going away.

We're not talking P5 level money or ratings here. However, if the 5 G5 conferences could make it worthwhile for NBCSN (or CBSSN) to overpay, it could be worthwhile for both sides.

I think it could have a BIG impact on recruiting over time and Johnintex I think the ratings would only increase if shown correctly

Correct, they've got NASCAR through 2024, so the xfinity series during the fall takes up their Saturday afternoons most of the season on NBCSN. They're giving NASCAR $440M/year for the last 20 Cup races and the last 19 xfinity races.

The playoffs month of September, NBC also has the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup, through 2021 at the earliest, so their on if ND isn't at home.

Why C-USA but not the Sun Belt?

Because CUSA, AAC, MWC, BYU media contracts are almost up. Sun Belt still has several years to go with their current ESPN contract no? The MAC is locked up with ESPN playing Wednesday games for another decade, so they are out.

Not true. The first wave had a choice. Thats why the original plan was so rushed and had the feel of something scribbled on the back of a diner napkin. The first wave of schools could stay and be part of the merger or leave and join the Big East. I remember being told that supposedly the powers that be in CUSA more or less made it known that if we left for that collapsing BE mess we couldnt come back. lol...we left anyway.

Frankly, at the time--I kinda felt like either teh Big East or the merged CUSA/MW conference would end up being fun to play in. I still think CUSA blew it by not going through with the merger.

At this point, the AAC has done a pretty good job of separating itself from the rest of the G5. A merger with the MW wouldn't make sense. I still like the idea of absorbing the best 4 MW schools to create a 16 team nationwide conference that would be about as close to a best of the rest grouping as can happen right now. It would be all-sports, largely play non-revenue sports within divisions to minimize travel costs, and could offer games in all 4 time zones. As the country's only nationwide conference it would have a very unique identity, would have some regional appeal in almost every major area of the country, and would be the only conference had a footprint similar to the footprint of a national network. Given that it would have the best brands in the G5, solid basketball, and it would dominate the G5 access bowl slot---I think that would be a very attractive media property. It might even be able to nab BYU.

Interestingly, what Billybobby is discussing would be sort of like merging all the G5 into one superconference (which is funny, because thats essentially how the CFP deal treats them).

That group buys detergent and Toyota's too. Truth be told--CBS-Sports is in the best position to execute this strategy. They already have the rights to games in the AAC, MW, MAC, and CUSA. They just need to buy some Sunbelt games and get serious about doing a Saturday road show.
An "off-brand" GameDay would last three weeks before any luster it gained would be lost. Few viewers would watch, hence why nobody does it. FS1 had the money at first and knew it wasn't a great idea.

Heck, Barstool is more into that demo and their attempts via Facebook wasn't even close to being a success.

To your detergent analogy, GameDay is Tide and any competing show wouldn't be All, Persil, or even Arm and Hammer, it'd be Xtra. SEC Nation is like the Gain to their own Tide.
