I figured you'd love the fact that more people are saying UCONN's failures are a result of coach/leadership rather than the AAC scapegoat.

You just named two schools that jumped ship on their conferences when they got the chance (Butler twice!) and another school that's openly trying to get out of their current conference but are constrained by geography. You're making the exact opposite of the point you're trying to make.

It's not flawed in any way - better recruiting is going to put a better product on the floor than worse recruiting, even if the coaching is poor. Even if UConn let Ollie go tomorrow and brought in an amazing head coach the next guy is likely to have an easier time recruiting to the Big East than to the AAC.

UConn's basketball roster is full of freaking 4 and 5 star recruits. Seems like they're recruiting just fine. They should be dominating. I actually want UConn to be the national title contenders they should be every year--it makes the conference stronger.

If UConn isn't happy with the AAC, that's fine. But stop the scapegoating. It's not the AAC's fault that Ollie can't coach recruits the rest of us would sell our mothers to have.

Yes it is. The 11th spot in the Big East is UConn's if they want it. If you think UConn is better of in the American, fine, but the option to join the Big East is there.

uconn needs to do what's best for uconn and if dropping football down to FCS (and build a north dakota state type program) and joining the big east in basketball and olympic sports is what's best for them then they should.

The next TV contract will either put it in motion or put it to rest. Regardless, Ollie's gotta go by the end of this season.

RE: Column : How much longer does UConn have to suffer in the AAC?
The BCFanBoy who wrote the article is an moron. If we had a decent men's basketball coach, we could be top 25 team again in the AAC.

The UConn fanbase isn't whining about the AAC. The reality, though, is that some of the UConn old timers miss some of the Big East rivalries such as Georgetown, Villanova, Providence, St. John's etc. (and being in the Big East would seriously reduce travel costs as there are a higher percentage schools that are located closer to UConn). Most of us, however, would only welcome the Big East as a plan B.

As we have said before, this is UConn's strategy (in order):
1) hold out to see if the ACC, B1G, or Big 12 come calling in 2023
2) if option 1 doesn't happen, remain in the AAC for all sports if the future money for the AAC TV deal is greater than the money that the Big East is getting at that time
3) if 1 and 2 don't happen, move to the Big East for more money, better basketball, reduced travel costs, and the restoration of some old rivalries

Only someone like that BCFanBoy writer would suggest that UConn should move to the Big East now. That is not the right move for UConn at the moment. However, it is nice to have future options. I know that we all talk about "Power 6" on here, but the cartel isn't going to let that come to fruition. Just because ESPN is writing nice articles about UCF now doesn't mean that they want us included. If anything, I think that the nice articles are a smoke screen for future plans to rip this league apart so that they don't have to pay it more money. UCF just exposed the entire P5 system and spit in the eye of all of the power brokers. That only gives the powers that be more incentive to try and tear down the AAC.

RE: Column : How much longer does UConn have to suffer in the AAC?
UConn, like all other G5's, had to play the football game. Football is where most of the big money is right now and probably always will be. So like just about everyone else in the league, you have(or had) to try to have a strong football program to be able to have a sliver of hope of getting into a "P5" league. Unless you are Rutgers, then you get a miracle.

That's why just about everybody in the AAC has spent millions of $ upgrading or building new football stadiums.

When ESPN and the ACC colluded to kill the Big East as UC, USF, and UConn knew it those schools had no choice but to continue on in the AAC for the sake of their football programs.

The AAC is trying, and I agree that some schools don't raise the excitement level for the fans as much as others, but If UConn is giving up on football or the AAC it's up to them as to what to do and don't blame it on the AAC.

I don't really think much of anything is being blamed on the AAC. It's easily been the best and most well-rounded of the G5 conferences. It's just a question of where UConn fits best long-term and where their priorities should lie. The Big East is pretty clearly the best fit for UConn men's basketball, the question is whether the AAC is the best long-term fit (and yes, I do think the idea that UConn was going to be a short-term squatter in the American until a move to the ACC or B1G comes along is dead) for the athletic department as a whole in spite of that.

Good article and I agree.

I like the AAC ok but really, unless we get a call up (unlikely) or Arsesco pulls some rabbit out of his hat (more unlikely), football will die a slow death for us all...some slower than others but slow death nonetheless. UCF was good and undefeated and didnt SNIFF the playoff. It wont get better. Look at the preseason poll for next year already- G5’s start over...P5’s dont. The playoff isnt for the G5 and never will be, lets be honest. And citing what some programs have done in the past as a basis for hope is pointless (UC in the Big East, Memphis, ECU in indy southern glory days, UH in the SWC etc)...its a new dawn. its not 1975 or 1985 or even 2009 anymore.

All that is to say, I would be all for jumping to the Big East in hoops and making fb indy if I were Uconn. You can counter that it will kill fb but Ive already said, our fb is all going to die a slow death barring a miracle anyway. $2mil/yr vs $30mil/yr is too big a gap. Even $10mil/yr vs $30mil/yr is too big a gap- take that out over 15 years. Heck if UC could get into the Big East, Id be all for joining Uconn.

Thoughts?

The UConn angst as a lot more to do with the poor recent hires in the two sports that matter. If Fball and especially Bball were performing up to the standards of teh better AAC schools in the respective sports, UConn, it's fans, alums, admins etc. would be fine as they would know they are in t a prime spot for a call up to the big leagues once a spot opens up. Now they are sitting back wondering what they can do as no league wants a meddling FBall program nevermind a once glorious Bball program that has fallen on really hard times.

Nice response. And fantastic job using cogent, logical thought to argue counter points as to why Im wrong in my most excellent assessment.

Here is a rendering of what Cincinnati and UConn Basketball would look like in the Big East:

How can this be fixed?

Hire better and schedule teams OOC that the fans want to see (ie old Big East schools).

Thats how I took it. The AAC is a more than adequate platform from which to build toward a national championship run. That said, it is a spread out mess and I can certainly understand how UConn fans might not find themselves brimming with excitement over a schedule of games vs far away opponents with which they share little past history.

However, it is the same for all our fan bases. UConn isnt unique among AAC membership with respect to this apathy toward the schedule. Frankly, after 20 years in the SWC--Ive felt exactly the same way since the start of our CUSA years. 04-cheers

As Wink Martindale used to say on the legendary game show Tic-Tac-Dough, "X with the Block". There's no Xavier would allow that to happen. They would lose out any recruiting advantage they have gained over us as well as perceived status in a better conference.

Thoughts?

As Wink Martindale used to say on the legendary game show Tic-Tac-Dough, "X with the Block". There's no Xavier would allow that to happen. They would lose out any recruiting advantage they have gained over us as well as perceived status in a better conference.

yup...thats why I said “if”
