RE: If OU brings BOTH rivals to a new conference
True super large conference would be able to operate smaller conferences, ie divisons but than knock out layers of overlap and be able negotiate better and bring back historic ties. I think the ideal endgame setup for college athletics would be a big 10 at 40 members and Sec at 24 members.

Why would the Big 10 need to be 40 members? Why would they want to have 40 members?
I could see two leagues of 28 to 32 schools each and for the reason of eliminating needless duplicated overhead expenses and gaining leverage. I can't fathom why the SEC or Big 10 would need or want more than that.

RE: If OU brings BOTH rivals to a new conference
I think best move for college football isn’t necessarily the best move to try to max out profits for the sec or big 10. Those leagues have the ability to kill the golden goose by picking off top brands but in the process destroying viewship from other parts of the country, thus lowering interest. Now a big 10 at 40 could create 4 divisons of 10 two of which would be an original big 10 and pac 10, than have a 4 team playoff. Realistically, the best outcome from today would probably be a pac 20 with 2 divisons of 10 that only cross over is a football title game in Las Vegas. The big 10, sec and acc all probably would remain the same but might jump to 16 max with any leftovers so a 2 game in house playoff is possible. So your looking at 68 schools max in those 4 leagues with the entire country covered.

The SEC/ACC & ESPN will go after the top brand state schools in the Big 12. We aren't just going to stand pat while 40 schools mobilize to form their own entity. But realistically we probably don't go that route anyway.
