So Notre Dame beats USC 49-14, loses to Miami 41-8 and with basically the same record is 1 spot behind USC and 2 spots ahead of Miami. I realize ND lost to Stanford who USC beat twice, but its still a little strange.
I understand why Auburn is #12, but they really should be higher. They were 2-2 vs. the top 4 with their other losses to #7 and #18 with a big win over #20 as well. I would have them 9th, although I really think they are better than UCF and Wisconsin, but you can't ignore the 3-4 extra losses.

I think they might have taken into account that USC was pretty banged up when the Irish beat them. In any case, 1 or two places is just window dressing.
I actually think the final coaches poll is a bit more accurate than the other's I've seen.

At a point in time the coaches poll meant something. That time has passed.

The American still had a pretty good season with 3 teams in the final top 25 poll. Does that mean that the bottom of the American has to be bad for 3 teams to be ranked? Look at the AAC East, there were the Florida twins, Temple and then UC/ECU/UConn. Does the American ( or the Mountain West ) have to have dominant and horrible teams to finish like the AAC did this year?

Is the Coaches Poll tied into CFP like it was with the BCS where they were required to put the champion #1?

Unlike during the BCS era, the Coaches poll is independent of the CFP, and the coaches are under no contractual obligation to name the CFP champ the Coaches poll champ.
Six of the coaches in the poll are from AAC schools, they all voted Alabama #1:
Houston
Tulsa
Tulane
ECU
Cincinatti
Navy

I agree it doesn't get much post-bowl attention any more, but it should get as much as the AP poll does. I guess many assume that the final Coach poll contractually has to mirror the result of the CFP title game, like it had to mirror the BCS winner, when actually it doesn't - the CFP and Coaches poll aren't connected contractually like they were connected in the BCS.
