Condolences to the WKU Family
I heard this evening of the passing of longtime "Voice of the Hilltoppers" Wes Strader. Wes did WKU sports for 36 years and after his play by play days, hosted a pre and post game show.

Wes was one of the great gentlemen in the profession of broadcasting. He was beloved by so many, including me. He was a valued colleague and was a guest in my home on more than one occasion.

He has a banner hanging in his honor at Diddle Arena.....well deserved.

My condolences to the Hilltopper family. We lost a really good one last night.

Wes Strader was 79 years old.

Good night, sports fans.

I knew this one would touch you amigo. The Wes Strader pregame show when he interviewed you caused me to come up an introduce myself to you before the game. I feared you wouldn’t be happy to meet me as I had been less than wonderful to your Cajuns back in those days. Much to your credit you knew most of my stuff on that subject was for fun. I honestly thought of you when a friend texted me about Wes last night. Thinking about guys that are institutions.

I don’t know if you’ve ever met Greg Walker. He’s the former Austin Peay play by play guy. I put him right up there with you and Wes. People you think of first when you think of the school.

Thank you for the classy post amigo. I miss playing you guys. We had way more entertaining games with the Cajuns than we didn’t.

I texted Greg when we played down at Peay earlier. I wanted to see him if he was in the house that Fly built. He told me he had not made it that night and that his health had kept him from the game. He is a great dude. And that call is not even the best stuff I’ve ever heard from Greg. Nobody can say “Mercy” like him. Lol. Like I said, some guys you hear them and you know they’re an institution. Wes was for Western. Greg certainly for Peay and Jay is for the Cajuns. Class move by him to come over and honor one of his fallen comrades.

'Beed we miss playing you as well.

I got a text last night from a friend in BG telling me the news and my heart broke. Wes was one of the classiest guys I've ever known. He was the only broadcaster (along with sidekick Todd Hamilton) that I've ever opened my home to.

We shared great stories over the years.

On a side note, we are having a basketball reunion this Saturday when we play ULM. I had a former player on the show yesterday that talked about all the great meetings with WKU, including an ESPN2 game at the Cajundome on senior night. Sparks hit a triple with two guys hanging on him in the final minute to give the Tops the win. And, the night Winchester dumped 40 on us but we still won 110-102. The folk at Diddle threw water bottles at us after the game.

Those were good times. We need to play each other again. You work on Rick. I'll work on Bob.

Your team is the one I miss the most from sun belt days. I wish USA was good again in basketball but your teams were always fun to watch

Great memories of Wes and Todd. I grew up with those guys when I wasn’t at the game, as well as pre and post game. Wes (and Todd too) were big time homers. Loved it! Told Coach O last week it was bad for Wes and it hit him really really hard.

When did TOdd call games? I don't remember him much? I know who he is, but don't remember him being around long..I remember Dave Hunisker for 1year, he was really good, hes now voice of Oklahoma St., then Mike Legg who not great for a few seasons.... I like Randy and Hal now, Randy is a big time homer which is needed in todays age...

Todd Hamilton was the color guy for WKU games along with Wes. He was football sideline in 89 and was basketball color 92-99. Lady Tops 99-00.
