Top 5 finishes the last 50 years. Saw this link elsewhere.
44 have made it, 34 have 2 or more, 20 have 4 or more and a pretty predictable 12 have 9 or more-OU, tOSU, Alabama, FSU, USC, PSU, Miami FL, NU, UT, FL, ND, MI.

RE: top 5 finishes last 50 years
38 of them have made it in the last 25 years. 26 with 2 or more. 13 with 4 or more. 6 with at least 8 in the last 25 years- Ohio St, FSU, Florida, Alabama, USC, and Oklahoma.
Looks like 92 have made final top 10 in last 25 years. With 20 in at least 13 times(over half). 5 with at least 18 in the last 25 years- Ohio St and Florida St(with 21 or 84% of the years), Florida, Michigan, and Virginia Tech(all 3 with 18).

Note: The tool allows you to pick the years and total rankings, top 10, top 5, #2 and top 1.

This is why you need an 8 team playoff to get more programs in the mix.

A lot of these combinations show the same 16 teams near the top, including when you measure total appearances in the polls, not just final rankings.
SEC (UF, UGA, LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn)
B1G (OSU, Michigan, Penn St. Nebraska)
Big 12 (Oklahoma, Texas)
ACC (FSU, Miami)
PAC-12 (USC)
Notre Dame
I think these are the best 16 programs of all time although Clemson has really started to gain some ground in these numbers in the last 5 years.
