Minimum wage hikes sending restaurants the way of the shopping mall?
http://www.foxbusiness.com/features/2018...-mall.html

Quote:Eighteen states raised their minimum wages at the start of 2018, but increasing labor costs are strangling the dining industry so much that restaurants could soon face the same fate as shopping malls.

“I think you’re going to see thousands of restaurants close their doors,” Willie Degel, “Restaurant Stakeout” host and CEO of Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse, told FOX Business. “Fine dining is going to go by the wayside.”

The downward cycle seems daunting to Degel and other industry insiders. As costs rise, only so much of the burden can be passed along to consumers in the form of price hikes before they decide they cannot afford the expense.

“When we increase in prices … we see guest count go down,” Degel noted. “The consumer is not willing to pay for the experience then.”

Quote:In addition to raising prices, businesses often cope with minimum wage increases by firing staff. Last week, casual dining chain Red Robin Gourmet Burgers (RRGB) announced it would eliminate busboy positions at 570 restaurant locations. Degel said he got rid of busboys at his New York restaurants two years ago, and has more recently turned to staff cuts “across the board.”

Quote:But technology has had another effect. Services like GrubHub (GRUB) are beginning to change the nature of the dining experience for consumers, who can enjoy a meal from their favorite restaurants without ever having to step foot inside. Similar to the way e-commerce triggered a shift in the retail industry, mobile orders and delivery could deepen existing trends for restaurateurs by transforming the traditional, in-house meal.

Who suffers from these trends? One answer is low-skilled and entry-level workers, who are often the first layer of staff cut when profits run thin or new technologies are introduced.

“I think it’s a real problem for people with low educational attainment and a low basic skills base,” Iain Murray, vice president for strategy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, told FOX Business. “That sets you in a trend whereby it’s very difficult … to gain the extra skills to [get] a job even at minimum wage. That sets you in for long-term unemployment.”

who'd a thunk it.....

the "fine dining" argument is bullshite.....they play under a different set of rules for the wait staff....really.....fk'n bus boys are now a problem....what a fk'n dipshite with his dipshite-ism.....fk him....

it's the jack legs that claim to be fine dining that are crapping their pants that will either relocate or shut down entirely.....just like where the west coast is headed.....

It will become carryout instead of dine in unless you want to order from your self service McDonalds machine

These are things that are coming to pass because of technology not because of minimum wage hikes.

Haven't you heard of uber eats and grub hub?

Casual dining is getting creamed-places like Chili's, Applebee's, etc.

Fine dining will do fine. Cheap fast food is getting squeezed but not badly. But that middle level is really hurting. Food prices have gone up a lot and so they are getting less affordable.

Think of redbox to blockbuster. Cut the labor and the consumer saves. Everyone wins except those that need a low skill job

Those soulless ****holes need to go extinct. They aren't as good as local joints, too expensive to be fast, and not fine enough for a date. Pointless inventions that didn't make sense 15 years ago...

I was just using those as examples. The local casual dining joints are going out of business even quicker.

Put a robot in the kitchen and one to bus tables and you're back in business.

You could put a few food bots in the middle of a circular complex and have four or five different restaurants spoke out from there.

Eating out won't end, but it will change.

No, you'll convert. The robots will be able to give you the dish of a master chef on demand. Bobby Flay's taos, Mario Balto's pasta, etc. Those chefs will license out their recipes. The bots will be trained by them and they will be able to re-create some of the world's best dishes on demand.

Our world is going to change, and it will be amazing.
