I'm sorry, but comparing Memphis to Nashville is like comparing Los Angeles to Stockton. The similarities are that they are in the same state, but their economies are based on completely different industries and types of labor.

Atlanta seems to do okay.

That being said, maybe its not that the Blackburn level politics, the Confederacy affirmation, the hostility to the LGBT community, etc. that is the root problem of the situation in Memphis, but really that those are a symptom of the bigger issue......

Memphis has an elite that really doesn't like change. Like New Orleans, they don't want things to change. So businesses slowly move out and nothing (other than FedEx) moves in to replace it. Economic activity slowly sinks.

And Memphis' elite appears to be VERY conservative. And it would rather fight with the African American population than work with them as equal partners in the regions' future. And the African American political establishment is resentful of the elites and is willing to spend its days fighting with the elites. You could say the same thing about Birmingham. And the two groups have little interest in any outsiders coming in and changing the dynamic because the current dynamic works well for them (while being detrimental to the overall health and competitiveness for the overall area). The elites already have a lock on the money. The political establishment already has a lock on the political power. Neither really wants to see the threat of a new group challenging them.

I feel good for the elderly who are able to leave the bay area and pay for their retirement off just the sale of their house. Real liberals (in all likelihood) like Ms. Dabak that deserve it. The alt-leftists taking it over and running it into the ground will soon be left holding the bag.

There was a lot of bum poop on the streets of Atlanta...when i lived there... Went to the Krispy Crème on Ponce De Leon one time with my dad...and a bum squatted and shat right in the parking lot 5 feet from our car. My dad was shocked... we skipped the donuts that day

We have a couple who moved to our neighborhood about 7 years ago from Cali. They paid cash for their house and are retired. They hardly ever go out of their house. The few times was when the man still took care of his yard, minimally, now he has landscapers do it so we don't even remember what they look like. I'm sure there's more as what Californians get for their houses you can get a really nice one here. Wait, I just remembered my neighbors sister and daughter also moved here from there about 5 years ago. It doesn't change things too much for El Paso as this town is really, really liberal despite most of them being Catholics. To them their religion is only important in where they go to church as they don't follow church dogma.
