Ark State preview
The Red Wolves are 6-13 and 1-5 in conference. They are 1-9 on the road. Two of their wins were non-D1. They currently are on a 5-game losing streak. Their best win probably was over FAU on the road. They likely will start 6-8, 6-7, 6-4 across the front line and also have 6-9, 6-8, 6-8 on the roster.

They have two players averaging double figures, led by Deven Simms at 16.8 ppg. They shoot fairly well (45% overall, 33% from the arc, 72% from the line). Their defense is fairly weak (49% and 36%). They are even on the boards, and it is a team effort, as no one averages even 6 per game.

Simms is their gunner, leading the team in 3PT attempts and shooting 37.3% from the arc. We will have to keep him under control. It looks like they go 8 or 9 deep in the rotation.

Sagarin picks us by 3 points, which is the home court advantage.
RealtimeRPI picks us by eleven.

This is one we simply have to win. I really thought we'd beat Texas State to get to .500. Not a ton you can do when a team throws one up at the buzzer and it goes in. Tough when it happens 2 Saturdays in a row. Some argue that those things even out over the course of a season. Hopefully, for us they will.

Some notes:

We technically go 6-8, 6-8, 6-9 on the bench, but those guys don't play. We have two big men. Last years incumbent in Tomas Bruce who lost his starting job after he got suspended a couple weeks ago for the Georgia trip, and Salif Boudie, who is in his 4th year of organized basketball and is rail thin. Other than that, we really don't play any other bigs. Jake Scoggins is the emergency forward who only plays if Boudie and Bruce get into foul trouble. There's another big on the roster in Shaquiile Fritz at 6'9 who injured his knee and is taking a medical redshirt.

We go about 8 deep. Bruce and Tristan Walley rotate in for Boudie and Grantham Gillard. Marquis Eaton is a Freshman who plays backup at PG. Very few others get minutes. Connor Kern gets about 5 minutes a game...sometimes. Scoggins a minute or two if we're in foul trouble.

The biggest issue we have as a team is that we have roughly 6 or 7 Division 1 level basketball players, the group we have don't slide into positions well. Gillard starts as a 4, when he's really a 3 guard. Boudie starts at the 5 when he's really a 4. Simms is more of a 1, but starts at the 3. Neither Cockfield or Lindsey is technically a 2 guard, but they rotate at that position because we don't have anyone else capable.

All 8 players who play regularly for us were recruited by McCasland or Balado. We've got a black hole of Brady guys on roster who keep the bench warm. Balado has been given complete control of the program and the freedom to run off players he doesn't want at the end of the season. He has a pretty big temper. He actually broke a chair he got so angry Saturday against UTA. A couple weeks earlier he publicly announced that if the players didn't want to be here, to let him know and he'd pull kids out of the student body to play instead.

This is year 1 of probably a 4 year rebuild. Whether or not our fans will be able to make it that long without going insane is another story.

We are obviously in a rebuild as well. We start 2 freshman, 2 sophomores, and a junior. Everybody who contributes will be back next year. The 2 best players on the team aren't playing this year- DeAndre Burns, our leading returning scorer and a transfer from FGCU. I've been told by more than one person, that the transfer is the best player on the team. Of course, we've all heard that before. I feel really good about our future. No clue how many games we win this year. However, since being blown out by ULL, we have won 2 and lost 3 close games to good teams (two literally at the buzzer). Regardless, I'm sure it will be a "war" this Saturday, like usual.

What's scary with us is that 3 of our major contributors are Seniors, so next year might be a bigger rebuild than this year.

When that Scumbag McCasland bolted in the Middle of the Night for UNT, he took our entire November 2016 Signing class plus our best Freshman from last years team with him. There's a possibility that next year might be worse than this year. We're going to be relying heavily on Balado's next class to come in and gel quickly, and also hoping that the players who likely will bolt at the end of this year will graduate. Otherwise not only will we stink, our APR will go down the drain and make things even worse.

Our fan base so far has been pretty good outside of a few to understand sort of what our problems are and support Balado in his very public effort to rebuild the program, but I'm not sure we have the mental capacity to withstand a major rebuild. Especially if football keeps up its mediocre pace of late.

I'm just ready for baseball season.

The nice thing about rivalry games is that both teams can stink and it can still be huge fun.

I saw that Roosevelt Smart (I think that's his name) is leading UNT in scoring with close to 20 points a game. He's a guy that signed with ASU. I agree with your scumbug description of McCasland. Not only did he take the recruits he signed at ASU, he left for a mediocre program no better than ASU (at least, Beard moved up). I still believe your "collapse", at the end of last season, was due to his focus being elsewhere (i.e. the UNT job). I hope he stinks it up at UNT, and I'm not even an ASU fan.

That's the one. Then what would have been our starting Power Forward this year is sitting out in Denton as part of NCAA Transfer rules.

We fell apart at the end of last year partially because McCasland lost focus, and partially because we were always vulnerable as much as we relied on Carter. Taking away a couple major contributors has not helped things at all.
