I've heard that while he is an excellent coach, he is not so great on the interpersonal side, and I'm sanitizing what this person (Jr College coach) told me.

Moton runs his program like a drill instructor but he is incredibly effective at it. He would be my Choice 1a, 1b and 1c if I were an ECU fan.

I don't see Crean using this opportunity beyond teasing interest for his agent to test the waters with an eye toward a return maybe a year later. Gottfried seems like an expensive, steaming pile of no thank you.

I am sure there are also other promising up and comers in the SoCon, Big South and elsewhere who deserve consideration.

NOOOOO! Tom Crean, while a good coach, can't win in Greenville.

So you need an extra, extra good coach to win in Greenville?

Not what I am saying....When he was at Marquette, he couldn't win in Greenville. I don't want somebody that can't win in Greenville.

Crean could probably win in Greenville as the home team coach. 03-wink

Marshall and Moton have had a terrific relationship for years.

RE: ECU's next Basketball Coach?
The more that I think about it, I really don't want Gottfried. There are rumors of him being a dirtball at both Bama and State. I really don't want that in Greenville.

Moton or Steve Forbes. Those are the tow top choices for me. Crean is a pipe dream.

Crean will likely be on our list when we get rid of Dunphy.

Why is it a pipe dream, cause he's a successful coach that has already been at a high level? We better start trying these "pipe dreams" if we want to succeed in this conference. Offer him what money we can and make him say no.

It's really not even a debate IMO, if he'll entertain it, as indicated he would, Crean is the 1st choice.

Then Dooley and then Moton I think. I'd be happy with Moton but Dooley has more experience and it's at a higher level.

RE: ECU's next Basketball Coach?
I think Forbes is going to hold out for a bit bigger jump, but if you can get him then it would be quite a catch.

I'm not sure I share the enthusiasm for Dooley - failed once at ECU, inherited a sweet deal at FGCU and has generally met but not exceeded expectations there. It would probably take quite a package for him to entertain the thought in light of prior history - why not go get an up and comer rather than a retread?

He didn't fail at ECU, he came in and won two seasons in a row at ECU and then had two bad years, no one wanted him fired and the AD at the time was probably the most hated ECU AD in the history of the school, until Jeff Compher.

He also recruited some really, really good players to ECU. The type of high caliber players ECU has never gotten before.

As far as his time at FGCU, I don't know what to tell you. It's freaking Florida Gulf Coast, he's been to four straight post seasons, is averaging 23 wins per year and has won 3 Conf Titles in 4 years. He's not exactly coaching at Kansas. He's done about as well at that school as anyone can expect a coach to do.

The guy had David West committed to ECU before he got fired FYI.

RE: ECU's next Basketball Coach?
Crean has to be the top choice. He took teams early one that were bad or decent and they had a lot of good years under him.
Not sure the appeal of Mark Gottfried. He essentially got fired from his last 2 jobs.

Moton seems like a good one.

I don't fully understand ECU fans obsession with Dooley. Seems like a decent choice but the 4 years he was coach at ECU we still werent very good. I mean I guess for ECU standards we were but that is a really low bar

How about Dooley part 2 and Skip part 2? I'd take it right now.

I agree, I just question how much he is actually interested. Supposedly his "people" have expressed some interest in the job, but I suspect that's just more trying to keep his name out there than anything else. Of course since the only guys ECU can actually talk to at the moment are unemployed coaches I'd use the present to figure out if he's serious and if he is make him an offer right now. If he's not that's fine go back to the list of Dooley, Moton, Grant, etc that I think could all do a good job.

RE: ECU's next Basketball Coach?
I concur that Dooley was not a failure at ECU. In fact, he has the highest W% in program history:

1 Joe Dooley 57-52 .523
2 Michael Perry* 6-6 .500
3 Eddie Payne 56-58 .491
4 Jeff Lebo 122-128 .488
5 Dave Patton 40-42 .488
6 Tom Quinn 113-121 .483
7 Dave Odom 37-43 .463
8 Bill Herrion 70-98 .417
9 Mike Steele 48-68 .414
10 Larry Gillman 21-32 .396

*does not include current season

Dooley didn't actually "fail" at ECU. Hammy made a foolish decision to fire him and he's only improved as a coach since then. Got 10 years of experience as an assistant at Kansas, where he was a part of a national title, and now has added more HC experience and gone to a couple of NCAA tournaments. The reason I like him better than Moton (who I'd still be very happy with BTW) is because Moton has only coached at 1 school. He played at Central, was an assistant at Central, and then been the HC at Central. He has no experience recruiting at the level we are going to have to recruit at to get to the upper level of the AAC. I suspect with his personality and work ethic he'd adjust and do fine, but it's a risk.

For the record I am not against Dooley. I just look at his body of work compared to a guy like Crean, or even Moton, and they don't really compare to me. He had 4 years at ECU and we had moderate success at best. Look at year 4 for a guy like Crean or Moton.

Crean took the team at marquette after taking over a rubish team and they improved the following years
In year 4, at Marquette, Crean went to the final 4!

Crean took over a bad Indiana Team in year 1, they improved the following years and in year 4 they went to the Sweet 16.

Moton took over a terrible NCCU team in year 1 and improved every year. In year 4 they went 22-9 (15-1), the following year they went to their first ever NCCA tourney

Joe Dooley took over an okay ECU team in year 1, and went the opposite direction. Whether or not he should have been fired, IDK, but he was trending down after his second season.

Basketball is one of those sports where it doeskin take 3 years for the freshman to contribute. Dooley just doesn't seem like the best candidate. No to Gottfriend I don't get that hire
