FAU Starting QB retires, Illinois backup QB does as well
FAU senior QB Jason Driskel announced on Twitter that he's retiring from football.

A true stunner that came out of nowhere. Driskel cited wanting to begin his career as a civil engineer. Last season, FAU began 1-2 under Week 1 starter Daniel Parr. HC Lane Kiffin turned to Driskel, and the Owls ripped off a 10-1 finish to the season. That overstates Driskel's importance a bit, but he provided a steady hand for a dominant run offense that badly needed a reliable caretaker. With Driskel out of the picture and Parr having transferred to Duquesne, Florida State transfer De'Andre Johnson and Oklahoma transfer Chris Robison will battle it out for the 2018 starting job (barring the late addition of a grad transfer). Johnson is the more mobile of the two, while Robison, a four-star true dual-threat, has the highest ceiling. Whoever wins the job will run the most dangerous offense in the Group of 5.

llinois senior QB Chayce Crouch announced on his personal Twitter account that he will retire from football.

With Jeff George Jr. announcing his intention to transfer on Wednesday, the Illini are now extremely thin at quarterback. Rising sophomore QB Cam Thomas is the only scholarship quarterback currently on the roster. Over the summer, he'll be joined by three-star recruit MJ Rivers. Illinois will almost certainly add a grad transfer QB in the meantime. Crouch started the first four games last year before he was benched for George.

I suppose I can see their point.

If a person doesn't think they have a chance to make it big in the NFL, and instead will have to rely on their education, it makes sense.

In Driskel's case, all it would take is one hit to the head and that civil engineering dream could be over.

Why risk it.

I think the writing was also on the wall with two transfers from major programs battling for the QB position. Driskel made a business decision.

FAU will be ok. They just signed 24 year old Charlie Weis, Jr. as their offensive coordinator.
