1998 Air Force Falcons
I stumbled upon them looking up something else.

Good Lord, I didn't know any service academy had a team that good since Roger Staubach.

Because of the way the BCS system was setup, they had no shot at a national title but wow, I forgot they had a team that good. Their only loss was by 1 at TCU too. Can you imagine the outrage if two teams had been left out of the picture with unbeaten records?

Air Force was good back then. I remember a few years later, Gameday going to #7 Notre Dame @ #15 Air Force.

AFA was #13 in the final AP poll that year. They finished #8 in 1985, when they were also 12-1.

Their best-ever AP poll finish was in 1958, when the final AP poll was still taken before bowl games; AFA finished #6 that year with a 9-0-1 record.

Dang. That was the year following BYU's national championship. Pretty nice pair of back to back years for the WAC.

And people wonder why the Big 12 was interested in them after they lost those four schools. It's not a stretch thinking they could compete with others in the conference. It wasn't that long ago they were quite dominant in a pretty decent conference.

Dennis Franchione's first year at TCU and thus also Patterson's first at TCU (as Fran's DC). The start of the uphill climb for the Frogs :-)

The win against Air Force was huge in itself. It also had a domino effect. Without the AFA win, TCU would have been 5-6 and not qualified for the Sun Bowl. That Sun Bowl victory over USC being, of course, another key moment in TCU's uphill climb.

Air Force beat BYU in the final year of the WAC 16 CCG that year....That TCU loss was a great thing for the BCS in its first year as they'd have an undefeated Tulane (CUSA) and Air Force (WAC)...This was the first year that the WAC was pushed out of the bowl alliance totally as before they were given opportunities with Holiday vs Big 10 and Citrus and Cotton (BYU). Heck, Quo, remember that year Wyoming of the WAC played LSU in the Sugar Bowl?
