Yes, IMO this thread went off the rails quickly. The article posted is about how an adjunct professor who has been a leader in the campaign to change the mascot was found by an investigation of being racially biased against a student who questioned his position on the mascot controversy. But the discussion in this thread has been regurgitating whether SDSU should change the mascot or not.

No, I get that. Also, I’m not particularly ideologically driven. Bleeding heart liberals are just as infuriating to talk to about any of these issues as staunch conservatives. They are both equally intolerable.

However, I do get sick of people bemoaning the fact that they can’t use pejoratives against entire races of people (anymore). You can do that, that’s up to you. However, you will be judged accordingly. I say don’t be such a “snowflake” and go for it! Say whatever is in your heart and damn the torpedoes!

This professor is obviously a goof. That name should not change and I felt that way before these revelations. Who is offended by the name of a long extinct tribe of natives? However, the Redskins name absolutely should change because it is clearly offensive to a fairly large segment of our population. Either that or change the logo to a freaking potato.

However, I can think of no good reason whatsoever to keep a name that so many people clearly find offensive other than to thumb your nose at people for no good reason other than you feel like being a jerk; and what are they going to do about it, right?

Really? According to this 2016 poll, 9 in 10 Native Americans do not find it offensive.

Washington Post Poll

If 90% of Native Americans aren't offended, you have to think that very few non-Native Americans are offended.

There are lots of nicknames, still in use, that have a past considered offensive to some. Fighting Irish has its roots in an ethnic slur. Many thought Orangemen was anti-Catholic, despite very few Americans knowing anything about the Orange Order. I remember back in the 80s when women's group objected to Spike, Drake's mascot, because he was a he? Come on. To me, everyone has to be ticked off about something.
