RE: Rice Baseball Spring Intrasquads
The Thresher posted the lineup for today's intrasquad up on twitter (sorry, i don't know how to do a photo grab)...
- Good to see Andrew Dunlap back in school (after working last Semester while rehabbing his shoulder) and in the lineup at DH.
- The projected starting infield (Proctor-Cruz-Comeaux-Sarchet) all healthy and playing together on the same squad.
- Projected starting outfield (Chandler, Gneiting, Aviles), along with DiCaprio playing for the other squad, though Aviles is playing 1B for now.
- Who the heck is C.Edwards, who's playing 2B/3B for one of the squads. Is he a late transfer? He's not yet on the official roster.

Answer to my prior question re. why Moss and Acker on not scheduled to pitch this weekend...

A couple notes from baseball practice today: team is largely healthy, but pitchers Dane Acker and Addison Moss, two potential starters, are dealing with some soreness. Wayne Graham says he expects it is nothing major.
Addison Moss is in the lineup as DH (with Dunlap DH for other squad).

Canterino back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in his Spring debut. Salinas looks solid, but he tried to slip a slider past DiCaprio and Dom hit a moonshot to Bikini Hill. First HR of the Spring.

Could C Edwards be Cade Edwards? Played for Tulane as a freshman in 2016, and at a JUCO in Arizona last year (where he hit .324). I just saw one site that said he was going to be signing with TCU and was going to be a potential starter for them but I don't see him on their roster. If it's the same kid, he played for Lance Berkman in high school.
Here's the bulletin board with information on Edwards.

Hmmm. Interesting. He's batting 9th on Dom's and our starting OF squad. If true, he provides quality infield depth at 2B, SS and 3B, and could be a right-lefty platoon with Comeaux if he struggles. Surprised we haven't heard about him.

The Thresher writer just tweeted a confirmation that this is indeed Cade Edwards. However, a player told him that he has to sit out this season after transfering from TCU. But why if he never played for TCU, and only attended TCU for one semester? BTW, in his first AB he had an RBI triple off of Jefferies.

This is speculation, but best guess is that he officially transferred to Rice from TCU and not JUCO. Seems he committed to TCU in June. Can’t guarantee why he wouldn’t be eligible, but that’s the best guess I have.
One would think he could apply for a waiver just as Pettitte did several years back. Doesn't make sense that he'd have to sit out another year. Worst case scenario is he replaces Proctor next year at SS, or he and Cruz battle it out to determine who plays SS and 2B...and he'd have 2 years of eligibility.

If TCU didn't release him, then he has to sit out a year. Kind of bad news if true, because he could very well get drafted and never play for Rice if that's the case.

I doubt he'll get drafted. He did hit well in JUCO last year (.324/.424/.448, with 9 SBs), but hit only .211 in 75 ABs for Tulane as a Freshman.

RE: Rice Baseball Spring Intrasquads
Here's Roger Tower's writeup of today's opening intrasquad...
https://rubpa.rice.edu/Content.aspx?id=4294976137
Amador, Esquivel and, especially, Canterino were all impressive with 2 shutout innings apiece. Both Jefferies and Salinas were solid, though each gave up a run.
Both Kravetz and Garcia had control issues, though Raul purportedly was up to 97 MPH on his heater.
Cade Edwards had a double and triple. Too bad he has to sit out this season (if true). Dom had the first inning bomb.

Maybe our new football staff should check out this "player" for the secondary. A little "handsie", but certainly stayed with their man.

Dunlap with a triple high off the RF wall and a single in his last two ABs. Gayle gave up two hits (including Andrew's triple), but struck out 3 and didn't walk a batter in his two innings of work.
Larzabal had a strong one inning of work yesterday before the rain came (1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 BBs, 2 Ks).

Are intersquads going this morning?

The last update I saw had BP starting at 2:00 pm with intrasquad to follow around 3:15-330.

Any feedback on the weekend? Who looked good. Who surprised with their performance?

Roger Tower's update of today's scrimmage is not yet up, but I've heard that DiCaprio has already hit his 2nd HR (in just a little over two games since yesterday's intrasquad was a rain-reduced one-inning affair).

Yes, Walt. I should have specified that I was looking for an overall assessment from folks after the weekend was complete with today's results included.

NL, I think we really need to wait at least through next weekend before even attempting to make assessments. Let pitcher go through three outings and get extended to at least 4 innings (for the starters). Given they've been throwing bullpens since early January, pitchers are usually ahead of the batters during the first week or two of Spring intrasquads. Certainly encouraging the early signs of power from Dom, however.
